Charles Morgan Bark 1:64 POB - By Bill-R

Hello Quint,

Thank you so much for the pictures. They will be very helpful for my construction. They show way more detail than the plans or other pictures I’ve seen.

After looking at the picture of the bow I posted above, I realized that the knightheads were too short. I
Kudos for doing the extra work to get it right. Not an easy decision to tear out finished work after realizing it is not to your satisfaction.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the likes and the comments.
Allan: I don't think anyone will look close enough to see that the knightheads are wrong, but every time I would look my own work, to me, they would stick out like a sore thumb. Also, thanks for the pictures they help out a lot. The first picture shows the bow area with the anchor deck removed. It gives a good view of the breasthook and how the cathead is configured. The second picture shows a great view of the tryworks.

Thanks,
Bill

Nice work! I don't know if your kit instructions address the issue, but there is a danger of "painting yourself into a corner" with rigging the Morgan. Note that the forstay(s,) (or are they a divided mainstay?) pass through the "anchor deck" and then (as I recall) through the main deck and (if memory serves) terminate below inboard on either side of the stem. In a model, securing these stays will be impossible unless the stays are fastened to the lower terminating points before the hull is closed up. This is generally accomplished by fastening a suitable length of stay cordage at the lower end, passing it through the holes in the deck(s) as necessary, and leaving the surplus end coiled until you are far enough along to attach the stay(s) to the mast. The stays take a lot of the rig tension, so the attachment points need to be secured well.

Great tip Bob. I had been looking at this and trying to figure how I would do the rigging. You made it very clear. Thanks for the help.

Hello everyone,

I've been working to get the catheads built and installed. Most of the catheads are hidden under the anchor deck, but I want them to be correct as possible. I still need to cut the first one to final length. The catheads were built from 4 separate pieces of wood. The color of the wood does not match well with each other, but they will be painted to match the hull.

Thanks Roger for the compliment and encouragement. It's funny, the more I work on the ship the more I want to make sure I do it right and don't take shortcuts. Also, the longer I work on the ship, the more I become immersed in the construction. Things that in the past I would have left as "good enough" have now become crucial to the outcome.
