OFF MY RANT HAVE SOMETHING THAT I NEED TO ASK, AS MOST OF YOU KNOW I AM A COMPUTER ILLETERATE, I MAY NEED A NEW COMPUTER HOPE NOT BUT PROBALLY IF I GET A NEW ONE will all my POSTS AND ESPECIALLY THE RESPONCES STILL BE AVAILABLE TO ME. THANKS Don
WINDOW 7 WILL STOP IN Januar 2020. so I am in the same situation. I talked to my Computer expert, and he said, Window will nor disappear from your computer and stop working. The main thing is, that one will not get updated in the future from Microsoft. I will wait and see what effect has, before changing to new computer with Window 10 and to learn to use it. If it should change in the future, I will as you, still use my old one as back-up pf old data and to use the programs that does not funtion with Window 10Progress!☹ Recently heard they are stopping support for Windows 7 early next year. Not wanting to risk updating my perfectly good PC to Windows 10 (after hearing all the horror stories of lost files), I have just got a new (2nd hand) PC with Windows 10 in it for just over £100. Have been copying files over into it. But as I thought, some of my old software will not work in 10, so they expect me to purchase more - No chance! Tomorrow, I will be putting the new one in service, and putting the old one elsewhere for use as a "storage hulk" that will never be connected to the internet. It still has 456Gb storage space left in it, so I will be able to continue to use it for special things such as photo editing/writing etc, and copying files to it from the replacement PC every month for safe storage. It seems to me that progress in electronics (and probably everything else) is to "improve" things by making them more user-unfriendly, and each new piece of equipment must be slightly (if not greatly) harder to use than that which it replaced! And above all, make sure that it cannot be repaired easily, and virtually impossible to physically open without specialist knowledge! Whilst not forgetting that it should be absolutely essential that it becomes obsolete within a few months and breaks down within a week of the guarantee expiring!.

I am past all that now - I have given up. Last night, I felt that I was close to sorting it all out. This morning, it was empty. All the files, all the programs that I had laboriously put in over the past two days were gone. I had not actually lost anything, as I had copied them from a separate hard drive into the new PC, so they are still safe. At 1830 today, I removed the new computer, and put the old Windows 7 back, and what a pleasure it is to have something running smoothly again. I am finished with Windows 10. I guess if the two new British aircraft carriers can manage on Windows XP, Widows 7 is good enough for me!
I just don't have the patience for this sort of thing.
The last two days were like my final year at sea. It was like that every day, trying to sort out all the electonic "junk" that was aboard, and it was a brand new ship as well! I finally quit that as well and walked away from the "rat race" back in late 1992
2020-21I fully agree with YOU -and some others - that Windows 7 is good enough for me -had some problems, when I switch from XP (BY FAR TO ME THE BEST PROGRAM), I had a short time windows 10 in my Computer -installed free of charge about 2 years ago by Microsoft, but had to be installed and go back to Window 7. the main problem I will shortly have is when I WILL HAVE TO CHANGE COMPUTER. (the one I have is bow rather OLD) here you can only get one by Window 10, and by having to learn how to use it.-meaning buying a book about Window 10 and how to use it correctly. Anyway not before 2010 and I have a very good Computer shop a few hundred meters away, BUT WILL NOT THROUGH MY OLD AWAY. Use it as an external hard disk, and all the programs that will not work properly with the 10-4
I do every week (2 external harddisks 500 GB each) a fully Backup of my own datas changing from one to another. I have ones in my professional life had a total breakdown VIRUS attach. the two hard disks are both USB HARDDISK so only connected to the computer to make the backup, to avoid virus etc from the NET AND A 1TH CLASS virus program

...looks like I am the only one like Windows 10 I work in IT (specifically dealing with desktops and servers) for a very long time. I do remember first PC based on 380DX. I specifically omitted too much technical detail, to make this post readable by many of us. Everyone has its own opinion and preference. It is great you can run any OS you like and will be happy with! Just make sure you understand EOL (End Of Life),they will stop supported by EOL. And...doesn't matter what OS you are running, make sure you have a full backup of your documents and valuable photos!!Wow, I’m having a great time reading all these comments. I thought I was the only one with a dislike of Windows 10.
