ENDURANCE (Occre kit)

Hi all

Yes, here I am again with another build log. You can't get rid of me :-) .

After my USS BONHOMME RICHARD cross section built, I was planing to start the GRANADO cross section but life have it ways to change your plans. A few months ago, our oldest son call me. He is in MA and we relocated to FL, so we can't see each other frequently. The call was to tell me that he saw a film about the ENDURANCE and he was now reading a book about that ship. He was so enthusiastic with the ENDURANCE story that he decided to order the OCCRE kit and it will be arriving in a few days, followed by "DAD it will be nice if you build it". You can guess my answer : YES !! But without mast/rigging :-) (I hate the rigging part of this hobby, unless it is really very very very easy).

I call him yesterday with the news that I was starting the build. Of course he tried to convince me to do the ship rigging. And of course I said.... "no way".

Nevertheless, within you guys and me, I will decided if I do the mast/rigging when that time comes.

After that nice family story, this log built start : "with these classical images of a POB kit start"

Stay tuned.... CHEERS !!! Daniel
I am just about to start the rigging in my Endurance build. Relative to many builds, the rigging is pretty straight forward, particularly when compared to my previous Endeavour build.

Guys.... let chat about the ENDURANCE hull.

Here is an interesting inage of the ENDURANCE hull.

Do you think I can try to replicate that hull building ?

The hull will be painted all black. So details (mistakes on planking) will be hidden using putty and sanding. Being said this, I can try to add another layer of planks and copper in the keel

Am I wrong ?
I you sure about your all black hull.

From GOOGLE

During Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the Endurance had an all-black hull above the waterline, which was a change from its original white and gilt color scheme. The ship was painted black to increase visibility against the white ice. The hull below the waterline was likely a reddish-brown or red ochre antifouling paint.

Key details regarding the Endurance hull color:
  • Original Color: When named Polaris, the ship was white with gilt scrollwork.
  • Expedition Color: It was repainted all-black for the 1914 expedition to ensure it could be seen easily against ice.
  • Lower Hull: The bottom was painted with a reddish anti-fouling paint.
  • Evidence: Frank Hurley’s color photos (using the PAGET process) and recent 2022 footage of the wreck suggest an all-black hull with a darker or brownish-red bottom, notes of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust.

Oh my, but you are a busy young man. I will be sure to follow your build, Daniel - build her in the way that gives you the most pleasure and satisfaction. I know it will be a great success!

Hey Heinrich, nice to see you on this build log. Do you meant "with or without rigging " ?

Sure it will be built in the way that is best for me. Nevertheless, my final decision will be at the time I have the ship finished and ready for masts/rigging.

There are 3 reasons for what, in principle, I said not to rigging this model:

A) Never had the skills and patience to do all those ropes and knots. Unless it is very easy like in my MARMARA built, or the Turtle ship, build here at SOS. That's why I always said " I hate rigging", in a funny way.

B) with age my hands aren't steady any more. There was a time that I was able to manipulate embryos and oocytes (eggs) (100 microns in diameter) under a microscope (I have a PhD in biology of reproduction and all my life worked in Embryology). My hands issue bothers me a lot when i need to do detailed jobs, like rigging.

C) Relocation: I moved already several times my house and the hobby. Having a model like the ENDURANCE rigged will be a call for disaster during a Relocation. But can be done, for that reason is "point C". We are now in Florida, moved from Massachusetts, but we are not sure if we will stay here till our end. It was a pain in the neck building a small crate to move the Marmara and the Turtle. Think about the ENDURANCE.

Cheers my friend !!
Daniel

I have no preference for rigging or without rigging. It all depends on how you feel taken all the practicalities into account. Moving a ship with rigging is a constant thorn in my flesh as well so I understand completely how you feel!

I have enjoyed researching photos of the ship to make the Endurance more accurate. If you view my Endurance build log you can see changes I have made including the red hull below the waterline.

tip: I built the Endurance, and used blackboard (school) paint for the hull. It is.. well.. eh.. black, but also extremely dull, which hides imperfections in the planking quite nicely, while keeping the individual strakes visible. Good luck with the build, it is a beautiful ship..and what a story!View attachment 591507
Model looking nice !! Thank you for posting the image. The paint i ordered is black matte.

Best

Yesterday, searching around SOS, I found your build log. I will post the link here for me to find it easy. It has many interesting changes that I will try to replicate. I was doing the same as you, going around images, but now you saved me tons of time, as you already identified numerous changes that can be done to improve the kit or, in other words, to make it more like the real Endurance.

Something that brought my attention was that, after all the changes you did, you haven't added the metal reinforcement at the keel bow. You posted an image of your bow painted black/red on page 2, without the metal reinforcement. Will you add it ? Or , if you have done it, please, could you post an image.

A nice image, courtesy of stephensandkenau.com, of the reinforced bow and the 2 color hull. I posted the website from where it comes below the image.

@Jimsky . , if this is inappropriate, let me know and, you can or myself, delete this posting. Thank you !

My friend Mike sent me the black and white Endurance image at the Drydock enhanced by AI for color and details.

Looks like the hull hasn't been painted yet. It is very clear now the 2 planks layers. The original of the ship and the ironwood planks as a reinforcement for the ice. Also is clear a fancy iron reinforcement at the bow keel and how it is cover by steel plates when the ironwood planking start..

Moreover guys. I sent Mike this other B&W image

Screenshot_20260408_150619_Gallery.jpgAnd he processed it with AI for color and details enhancements.

Looks like the ENDURANCE is being painted. But details of the lower hull section with double planking are now masked by the "paint".

Endurance 3.png

And the STEEL BOW REINFORCEMENT isn't fancy. It was the "chain" in front of it. :-)

Well Daniel... the ship is called The Endurance for a reasonROTF
Along with the rigging you may wish to be a bit more accurate to the ships build. After looking at photos, I made quite a few alterations to mine.
Most notable is the metal supports for the lifeboats towards the bow. I heated the metal and carefully bent them the other way so I could mount them on the inside like the actual ship has. I included some photos to give you a visual guide if you want to dive deeper.
Good luck on your build! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

Thank you very much Joe for posting the images !!! I can see you did a few changes to the kit. They all looks great. That rigging work looks also fantastic. For sure i will be paying attention to your changes as well as the ones others modelers did.

Thanks again !
Daniel

Interesting. The Photos & Model shipyards model show the the forward deadeyes on a sideboard and the more realistic steering mechanism than the current Occre model
