Fife-Scottish Fishing Vessel, Amati_Victory Models 1:32

Nice soldering unit. I just watched the American Beauty videos for their units and they look to be very easy to use.

Bill
Bill,
It is a very nice unit and so far, easy to use. I only wish I had ordered it sooner and had it before I soldered all the pieces I've already done. No more pencil torch and conventional soldering iron for me. I guess for $600 it should be good. ;)
Can't beat their customer service either. I had a couple of questions which they answered promptly. I ordered this from the manufacturer in Michigan last Thursday they shipped it on Friday and I received it yesterday, Tuesday. I had to laugh because the whole package was 11# and shipping charge was $10.95. Quite reasonable considering shipping costs these days. The laugh part is that I placed and order for some additional accessories today and the shipping was also $10.95. Must be a flat rate charge as this order probably will be around 2-3#.

Hi Ron,
I will be very interested to see how it works for you. After watching the videos, I can see how it will be very easy for spot soldering, but I wonder how it will work for soldering a seam. looking forward to your videos.

Bill,
Look back at pg. 122 where I soldered the two pieces together and the solder flowed along the joint of about one inch. I know my lighting isn't very good for macro shots. I placed three VERY small cutoffs along the length of the 1inch joint from the .030 solder and ~3 seconds of applying the power and it flowed along the entire joint.

I don't do videos  Hard enough time taking pictures

Well I've put it off too long. Time to get the bottom of the hull painted.
Got it all masked off and, hurricane aside, it's time to spray some paint.
I really hate painting nice wood however, since the beginning I thought I'd go with what I've seen with fishing vessels and paint the lower hull.

I don't know who Rob is Jim.
Just for you I found some pink poster board to use as masking. Could have turned it over and used the green side however, I know your stand on pink cutting mats ;)

Ron
Sorry Ron, :eek:Pink mats are ok, it is just a green color that makes me misname our members. ROTF ROTF

As I stated before I don't like to paint nice wood however, In keeping with the theme of the Scottish Fishing Vessel I decided to paint two colors. One color to be white just above the waterline and orange below the waterline.
The Walnut which is masked off will be finished with Danish Oil. At least that is the plan right now.

As anyone who has done any painting knows paint doesn't hide defects it MAGNIFIES them.
I will say that in my RC aircraft building days paint was not your friend as it adds the dreaded weight to the model. Being a ship model, who cares regarding additional weight. Not me anyway

PRIMING: Applied (3) light coats of heavy bodied filler primer at 10 minute intervals then letting the primer to fully dry before applying a liberal coat of 3m Acrylic Glazing Putty.

I did say liberal didn't I. This stuff sands very easily so rather then look for areas which stand out I find it's just as easy to cover a large area, needed or not.

FIRST SANDING: 240 grit dry sanded removing majority of filler & primer

FINAL PRIMING (hopefully): (2) light coats to show any areas that may need to be addressed.

NEXT STEP TO COME: Wet sand with 400 grit then spray the white.
Mask the waterline and spray orange below it.

Primer/Filler from rattle can. All the paint will be airbrushed.

1"x3" sanding tool. I've had this one for many years and I like it because it is not hard plastic but flexible which is great for sanding compound curve areas.
I bought another one recently but it is hard plastic and is ok for flat surfaces. They have hook-n-loop which makes for easy changing of sanding strips.

Don't like painting the wood (that's just me), You did an excellent job. How old is Milton?

Milton is three or four days old since building in the Caribbean and Gulf. Forecast to be a cat 3-4 when it makes landfall around Tampa which also puts me in the bullseye although I'm not right on the coast but just a little further inland.

Thanks for the likes Guy's.
It came out ok although I had forgotten my days of RC aircraft painting when I would seal the tape edges with clear prior to shooting colors. This is especially true for inside corners which are sometimes difficult to be perfectly sealed. I had, and still have, a few spots to tweak.
As I said in the beginning I really don't like to paint nice wood but I was keeping with the fishing boat theme.
