Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

That's a great modification Grant. I did not replace the position of the oar ports and so the gun port lids do partly cover the oar ports, so great alteration from your part! I also keep the gun port lids as one and just cover the whole with veneer. :)

I like your approach to the lid part....keep up the great work...
Good afternoon Peter. Thanks. It does provide the solution. The only issue I see coming is the port maybe in the way of the cannon rigging? I will check with a dummy cannon. I did only 4 so far so not a train smash to change. These positions work well for the hull side tho. Cheers Grant
Very nice touch to have single piece gunports.
Moving the oar ports; oar ports means oars means rowing banks? Do you now also have to move the rowing banks, or aren't there any?
Thanks Johan. Nope no rowing banks on the Xebec. Now you mention it, they must have rowed standing? Cheers Grant
Clever innovation with regards to the oar ports Grant. I fully agree -trying to cut those small square oar ports can only spell one thing - unless you adopt my pumice stone method to square the ports. But that would need a pumice stone cut/grind down to the exact dimensions.
Thanks Heinrich. Now way would I attempt making those small squares even if I had a digital milling machine ROTF
Great solution Grant! ;)
Thanks Dean.
You are causing yourself what looks like a problem, Grant. But with that good planned overthinking, this will certainly provide a nice solution. A little contrarian is always nice to follow.;)
Regard, Peter
Hi Peter. Thank you.Luckily the gunports don’t change and these tiny oar ports fit well with the adjustments. My planned changes are small but numerous and structurally not much changes. It’s more the look and feel of the Xebec. My only concern now, is cannon rigging- the new oar port position may hinder the rigging? I will check that when I get home but may have been a serious oversight….. or not…I will see. I’m pretty sure many changes to my vision will occur due to simple architecture as I go. Redos a plenty on the horizon.
I definitely hope we'll not end up with an acronym like BA-RF-Ing.. (Builder Approved-Retrospectively Fitted-Ingenious)
ROTF ROTF ROTF. BARFing may yet occur. So far so good tho.ROTF
Cheers Grant

Although I have difficulty believing that, it could be possible.
I found this though: 3D-model by sonik52
This representation doesn't show any other rowing provisions than the oar ports.
Probably small wooden benches or stools could easily stowed away and put in place when the ship used it's oars. It's not something that was on the deck permanently. It's in the way when manning the guns so to say.

That would be a plausible option.
I agree with you that fixed structure would be heavily interfering with gun manipulation.

Grant, how many instances have you discovered of port covers opening to one side?
Good morning Vic. Good question… ;) . These simulated oar ports are on the inner side of the bulkwarks. There will be a matching process on the outer side. Got to make sure they are in the exact same place - may have some fun here. Cheers Grant

Good morning Johan. This is such a cool 3D Xebec! I love the rotation and seeing the planking from the underside. I have never seen a Xebec of this design before and there are a couple of features I really like. A very unusual deck structure and cannon layout for a Xebec. Thanks for this it is awesome.

Have you ever tried to row on a movable seat? There at least has to be a firm foot rest.
That would be a plausible option.

This is an interesting discussion. Even on the Le Requin monograph diagrams, which I believe is the most well documented Xebec, there are no provisions for how these guys rowed their way in or out of battle etc. Just oar ports. I do know that the cannon operation could not be interfered with the oars as this was one of the strengths of these vessels during a battle.
Cheers Grant

The subject is just mindboggeling. In order to row you need space and the oar or sweep needs to be in front of yourself to be able row. How they did it with the cannons in place just eludes me....
Thank you for another mindcracker after the stern lantern mystery....

Speaking of the Le Requin...see this

Oké, Grant, you got your work cut out for you.
I'm expecting you to go full throttle for a Grant Xebec Special, POF, simulated

Good morning Dean. I have most certainly seen this Le Requin. It is at another level of modelling. An exquisite model. Thanks.

Good morning Johan. I ride wide open and my modeling follows similarly…..Grants Xebec special is on its way… . May have a few “offs” along the way thoROTF

Good morning.

Planking the upper deck. Continuing with a simplified Le Requin deck. I used a 3 butt pattern but only wanted 2 rows of treenails.

I also lined the start at the fore of the deck. Not sanded completely yet.

Treenails. I rather enjoy the untidy look - not intentional.

The Transom I used 3mm (rather than the kit 6mm) planks. The knees look big as they need to be worked smaller due to the smaller transom I made. These are dry fitted.

Here what my reshaped Xebec looks like so far :

I truely dislike LIME wood. Red circle - I used cotton buds to clean off any excess wood glue and even then it seeps far into the Lime (so porous). Hmmmm……..It should only ever be used for a first planking layer - note to kit manufacturers.
Cheers Grant
