Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning. Not much activity on my Xebec. I decided to make some scuppers. I see on the Le Requin they are triangle shaped so went for this. I’m not sure at this scale my Xebec will hold so much detail but I went for it anyway. Drilled a 1.5mm hole and used a small triangle needle file to shape. It was difficult with the veneer to finish them off as the veneer tends to chip. They are 1.65mm and 150mm apart.

Good Morning Grant,
your scuppers are a great detail and very difficult to make on this scale, they turned out very well. By the way, thank you for visiting my construction diary.
Good morning Tobias.Thank you. The scratch build logs are something I should visit more often. There is so much to gain and learn from guys like yourself and see how you do things. I will be visiting your amazing La Palme build more often. Cheers Grant

I am amazed how you pulled this one (the scuppers) off on this scale I'm wondering? Great addition to your Xebec.

regards,
Peter
Good morning Peter. Thank you. Making them smaller than the 2mm as per the kit and plenty adding more was a challenge. Not perfect but only close up photos show that. Still plenty to go:D. Cheers Grant

I was going to say 'great set of scuppers' Grant, but that just sounds crude somehow ROTF
They have worked out really well though, and triangular as well, haven't seen that before. And how good are needle files? Don't know where we'd be without them...
Good morning Mark. Thanks. Most ships just have the round scuppers however I’ve use the Le Requin drawings for many aspects of my Xebec and they have plenty of triangle shaped scuppers. It is a mission to get those tiny triangles in line, maintain symmetry and keep them all the same size. …..sort of getting there. It does look cool. Yep needle file are a gem.

Good morning.

My full scale war with Veneer has intensified!!
I look at how Nigel (@NMBROOK ) works with veneer and I realise Grants talent is lacking. Non the less the war continues- time to bring out the big guns!!ROTF

Fitting the stem: I did not want to place the stem and false keel at this stage however I kept chipping the veneer at the bow and then broke a piece. Eish this stuffCautious. So I had to insert the Stem.

I do like my redisgned shape of the bow which follows the stem at the top.

Photos- chips and all.

Under Led lighting I love the colour. Pity normally the Sapele is a little orange:

I do think I can work this into something reasonable. Fine detailed sanding a little filling, treenails, and a waterline ……..Let’s see….:). For Paul (@dockattner) I will get Grants Xebec sexy.ROTF

Cheers Grant

You have been an exceptionally busy young man, Grant! Planking done, gun carriages (stained or not), scuppers, treenailing and the like ... and it all looks superb. Sexy is good, but remember she needs to look like a Dancer - so I suppose a sexy dancer is in order!

Good afternoon Heinrich.Thank you. You are spot on. My contemporary Xebec is “one” of Simon the dancers…..a “sexy dancer” is required;). Cheers Grant

Doesn't look half bad!
My guess is that when viewed from some distance, no, not 80miles, the hul, will look rather good and the flaws will drop back quite a bit. Our problem is that we're sitting at a viewing distance of preferably no more than an inch, thus noticing every little deviation..

Good morning Johan. You are correct. From viewing distance it’s looks cool. Not what I wanted tho. Paul gave me some good advice working with needle files and I do believe I can neaten this up so even close up pics will be reasonable.Cheers Grant

It’s looking nice, Grant. I am sure it’s gonna look ‘more then better’ after the sanding etc. And then some oil …….. :)
Regards, Peter

Good morning Peter. Thanks. I know I will improve it some. The edges of the veneer kept hooking on my jacket sleeve and chip, chip.… no finesse Grant at it againROTF.

Great progress Grant and it looks perfect. However the kit is wrong with the rudderpost. These gaps shouldn't be in there only on the rudder. I made the same mistake, corrected it later during my build. I had some trouble to fit the hinges correctly, that's when I found out the mistake. If you can correct it at this point during the build would help you later on.
