Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning. Ricochet rabbit at it again. Speechless. The off centre deck column for the boom which runs to the transom strut : made per the kit just added some nails. All laminated wood and cast metal parts are painted so went with my brown red and black theme. The large cleat is pear wood from Dry dock as the Kit has horrid metals ones.

I scratch built the quarter deck railing (I thought scratch building was doneo_O) but the kit look just didn’t go with the rest of my build. The knees are from the kit. I cut my final left over Victory plank to make the 1mm frame and the 5mm top rail. It is a little rough around the edges even Sanding with 1000 grit didn’t help and I have no More walnut. (Victory was a very old kit and walnut dry).I Found some barrels (I stained them oak) in my supply box and I think they look cool here- just placed on so long- will detail them if I leave them here. Thanks Peter @pter
I did sort of go with his design.

Good evening Shota. Thank you. I’m pretty pleased how these came out. Cheers Grant
You're catching up on me.
I love the quarter deck railing you made....better than mine for sure! Okay
Good evening Peter. Thank you. However…..your Xebec is quality and premium crafting. I aspire to produce the quality you have and love the fact you are ahead of me so I can play copy cat. Thank you for your input and following my humble Xebec. Cheers Grant

Good evening Peter. Ah yes it is nice to start to fill that “tennis court” as someone (I think Johan @RDN1954 ) once put it. I still need to find a Helicopter for his heliport tho ROTF
Hi Grant, just checking: did you leave an opening in the front column foot? This is needed for a rope that is attached to the foot of the pedestal.

Ahhhh Peter…now you tell meROTF. Nope I did not and I don’t believe I’m going to be able to make one. There is a tiny gap the kit knees left but all the rope scales on the kit are too small so I don’t know if this is going to be big enough. I will make a plan when I get there tho.

Thank you Daniel. I was pretty happy with the outcome….sometimes it works out….and sometimes not :D
Nice, very nice. Love your scratch building. Handy to have the Grog barrels on deck.

Jan
Good evening Jan. Us South Africans always have a couple of barrels of grog. A braai and some “dop” ( your Dutch origins should get that) is a common occurrence down here- tradition in fact.
That quarter deck railing and facade is the BOMB!
Good evening Paul. Thanks my friend. At times while creating this Xebec I have considered placing some TNT under her and having some fireworks:D:D.
Cheers Grant

Absolutely stunning, Grant, what a joy to watch her grow.
And as far a I can see, it's close to perfect.

(For some odd reason not all updates find their way to my inbox or alerts, yours occasionally included...)

Good morning Johan. Thanks. Your “close to perfect “ got blown out the window this weekend.. See my post on the bowspritSpeechless. Cheers Grant
Details, Details, Details - you’re nailing them all my friend!! Beautiful!
Good morning Bill. Thank you
Good morning Grant, great work as we know it from you. Give Heinrich my regards when he visits.
Good morning Tobias. Thank you. It will be good to see H. We haven’t set up a date yet but holding thumbs it works out. Cheers Grant

Good morning. A bad modelling weekend .

This weekend while making the bowsprit support a major symmetry error revealed it’s rather ugly head :

Bowsprit support- I couldn’t use the kit parts as I change the the bowsprit stem. Using my last piece of African walnut big enough I cut out and while shaping it to fit my bowsprit stem design. ……I broke itCautious.

While doing this I noticed the symmetry wasn’t exact. Marginal and I have to go with it broken join and all:

DRY FITTED.
……and then….major redo necessary…..I took a photo for you guys from the front and….o_Oo_Oo_O
64CF5848-2E46-47F3-B7EC-FBDD1A11DD3C.jpeg
The port side bulkwark at the curve was not sanded down to match the SB side. The rail with the heat and bending is also a little “wavey”. Why I never saw this previously only the model ship building gods know- I’m sure they had a little chuckle here.ROTF.

Redo time- hopefully I don’t destroy to many fittings while I do this…

To make myself feel better I played a little and stained and painted my little “grog” barrels and made a bench for my crew to sit on when downing a pint or tooROTF:D:D.

Morning Grant,

Well, unfortunately this looks way too familiar to me, if that's of any consolation (guess not)...
Nice R&R-area you created, though I have my doubts about the contents of those barrels; they look rather suspicious... Too bad the shipwright got this R&R on the bow on his hands, otherwise he could join the crew enjoying whatever is in those barrels.
Seriously, maintaining symmetry is in my eyes nigh impossible, despite all our well-intentioned efforts.
From past experience, in a previous life, it was discovered that the original loft surface in a specific area of a fuselage was not symmetrical. It only surfaced because we digitized the old lines and started comparing.

Back to your issue: either you break her down to the offending parts and build her up again, or accept the discrepancy and try to cover up as good as you can get it.
(And, just guessing here, I think a lot will be covered up, because of all the additional bits and pieces and the standing and running rigging will be obscuring the view on those offending parts. Too bad your audience on SOS knows, plus the internet never forgets!)
