You guessed it perfectly! They are small pieces of cardboard that help to pull out the fixing nail once the glue has set.I think, that I realized a very clever idea:
These , I guess they are some small pieces of felt: I guess you use them, that you are not damaging the wood during hamerin and fixing the wood - here the plank

and they are located in the holes for the later treenailing of the plank.
So does I interprete this correctly, that when the glue is dry and the plank is fixed, you pull out the brass nail and afterwards you implement a finsl "treenail" in the same hole?
