Half Moon (Corel) (SM18) 1:50 Scale [COMPLETED BUILD]

Decided against furled sails on this ship. Mounted the bowsprit and mizzen mast.

Need to clean the mount attachment area.

I tried cutting these round pieces that mount where the mast goes through the deck. But, couldn't make any without breaking them. So, cut a 3/16" wide strip of heavy paper and wrapped around the masts. Then painted them black. They are shiny now, but plan to either brush or airbrush a clear matt over entire ship.

Was trying to mount the masts at the correct angle. Then remembered I had this tool which I hadn't used in a long time. I set it on the plans base aligned with keel of the ship and set the angle of the mizzen. TOOL on Amazon

AND NOW... for the part of ship modeling I love the best... Ratlines!! I had ran out of small black thread for the foot ropes, and I had to use the kit supplied rope. They didn't provide any black, so I dyed some.

Finished with the ratlines. Looks like the stays are next.

Just noticed in the photos that the mizzen mast doesn't have any rope bands up the mast. Checked the plans. This mast doesn't have any rope around the mast. I guess they weren't required to strengthen the mast as it only carries the one Spanker (right name?)?

Yes, the mizzen doesn't usually have woolding (reinforcement bands), because it is not built with nearly as many timbers to make up its diameter as the main and fore masts. As a modeler, it's easy to assume that masts are one huge piece of wood. You'll get a new respect for mast builders when you look below and see how complex masts really are.

Decided to build this ship next. There are several nice build logs on this ship on SOS. I'll attach some images of this kit. Don't know if the kit has ever been updated.
Can I ask a favor? I am beginning to build Corel's WASA and have found an aggravating problem with the wood parts description and coding. There is a wood in the kit that is not identified. One type is listed as "TA" and one it "TI." "TA" is not listed and the plans call for "TA" to be used for deckiing. I think the decking called for is Tanganika but it is not included in the description in the instruction manual. I would like to use walnut but the kit doesn't seem to include walnut for this purpose. Xan you please copy for me the wood parts listing descriptions so that I can figure out what the plans call for? I would greatly appreciate this! Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone.

And thank you for the image Kurt. Had no idea. I thought the masts were just one big pole. Now I see that masts are made from several pieces of wood and banded together.
