HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Wow Heinrich! Almost 11 hours at sanding, you must have used up quite a few sheets of sandpaper as well as cups of coffee.
Daniel, I tell you - if I had known this beforehand, I would never have done it!

Sanding tools. That is 80-grit and Paulownia is supposed to be a "soft" wood. Well, these ones are on steroids. And you are right, there is even an inner of a toilet roll for the curves.

I would guesstimate I am probably 25-30% percent done.

11 hours! You're using the paper on the right way? You know that the rough side needs to be on the part of the wood that's need to be sanded. The rough side is not made to have more grip in your fingers.
I am holding it in all sorts of way Stephan - but always with the black side on the wood ! :D

Looks to me you are well on your way now to a very nice hull prepped for planking with those beautiful oak planks.
Thank you my, friend - I need the encouragement. That is all I am thinking about while doing this. If I can get this right, the planking will be so much easier. I know it looks terrible at the moment - to me it does - but there is a line emerging there and at least my fairing seems to have absolutely been spot on.

But the last picture looks better. The curved lines of the sanded blocks gives you a extra reference to give her beautiful lines.
Now you invent in time, later it will pays back double.

Heinrich, good afternoon. This is a necessary job, with a lot of labor. You wrote correctly, then it will be much easier to do the skin. I noticed that in three places you touched the keel line. Be careful, then you have to build up.

Thank you, Peter. The filling of the hull with for sure assist in the planking. Now that the hull has been filled, I can see that my fairing on the Starboard Side was perfect, but that brings another caveat of its own: Now I have to make absolutely sure that my filler blocks are 100% flush with the bulkheads and the closer you get, the longer it takes, because the wood becomes more and more solid.

You are 100% correct Sasha. When sanding the blocks flush against the keel, I did damage the false keel in 3 places. Building it up is the last part of the agenda tonight - and tomorrow I need to be more careful on the Port Side. Well-spotted - you can't hide anything from experienced eyes! :D

Sasha and I spoke about "building-up" the false keel where I damaged it while sanding. How to do this? I will show you my recipe.

1. Collect sawdust. Of that, I have plenty.

2. Add a big blob of PVA.

3. Stir very well until ...

4. You have a nice, thick and uniform paste.

5. Apply to the affected area and leave until tomorrow morning. It will be as hard as granite and can then simply be carefully sanded to shape.

It is not much of a train smash on the WB, because the garboard strakes will lie flush against the keel, while the real keel still needs to be installed on top of the false keel, but nevertheless, I want the maximum gluing area for the mounting of the real keel - that is why I have filled it up.

ROTF Hi Ken. It is called Paulownia wood which is supposed to be more or less an equivalent of balsa. However, in reality, it is much, much denser and therefore sands a lot more difficult too. I am working on these forearms - and an anchor tattoo may be an excellent idea! :D

Starboard side looking great. PVA+Sawdust works wonders as a homemade wood filler.
You are absolutely right Ken. I actually wanted to say that, but I forgot. Thank you for mentioning it - it is a great filler! Thumbsup

Heinrich, I admire you’re perseverance and dedication to get your WB #2 build just right. I assume that since the first side only took eleven or so hours that the other side will take about the same time. I hope you have enough coffee and cigarettes on hand. Can you post left handed since you might need to let your right arm rest for a couple days :rolleyes:
