HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Not only going for the highest possible quality standard, but also willing to take a risk.
I am looking forward to see the outcome of all your hard work.
You mention risk taking.

Have a look at this picture of Ab's model.

I am not sure what color Ab has painted his bulwarks from midships to stern, but to me it looks like it might be black (Ab has used black quite a few times on some of his previous models). So now I am even playing around with the idea of using black hornbeam and oak inserts planked horizontally. Then, of course, painting below the waterline will also be something that I will have to make a decision about.

Lordy, Lordy, Heinrich you keep that process going and Ron and I will never be able to keep up.

There was a time in my professional career when I did a fair amount of lecturing at seminars and conferences attended by fellow orthodontists. My most requested program was: Mistakes I have Made. This was a lecture where I shared my diagnostic and treatment failures, foibles, and missteps. It was funny and tragic all at the same time. At the end I showed a case that turned out better than anyone could have predicted. The take-home was that I would have never been able to successfully treat that patient if I didn't have a deep pool of failures to have learned from.

Failure only defines us if we stay in that place...redemption is always available if we choose that path.

A blowtorch can solve many problems ROTF.

Blowtorch? so that’s what you meant by “diagnostic and treatment failures” in your Mistakes I have Made lectures ROTF

Heinrich, you have succeeded! And it looks absolutely wonderful. The wood tones and the curves are a delight to the eyes. Even the heavy grain works to your advantage as it highlights the curviness rather than running against it (I trust that was intentional rather than being a happy coincidence). A one of a kind ship being built by a one of a kind builder. Who couldn't fall in love with that? Congratulations on what you have accomplished thus far.
My dear Paul - thank you so much - I do believe you know by now how much I appreciate that coming from you. I am very happy with where I am, but I cannot relax completely until I have test-fitted the deck and installed the capping rails to get a real idea of how the hull's curvature shapes up. As far as the planks being pre-selected for the pattern of the wood grain - you give me far too much credit! ROTF I would have loved to say it was, but even here I try to build as the Dutch built - whatever plank comes next! Thank you again for your very kind words - they serve as great motivation!

Heinrich, my friend, i think that your grin should now be from ear to ear, because of the beautifull outcome of your planking;):):)

Peter my friend - I am very careful here. I want to grin from ear to ear but I first have to install the cap railing (potdeksels) to see clearly the line that hull follows and then I have to bring the upper parts of the bulwarks (spanten) inwards to their correct angle. I have fitted one side of the deck and that looks OK - not wonderful, but I can work from there. :)

Hello Everyone

Today was another busy day in the shipyard but there is not a lot to show for it. However, it formed part of what I call my "Checks and Balances". If I want to build a truly accurate model, I have to pay particular attention to this.

Even though laying down the deck only comes much later in the build, I know myself - I had to see how the curvature of my "reworked" hull stack up against the curvature of the deck. If there were big discrepancies here, it would point to an incorrect hull shape. Normally @Kolderstok Hans supplies a deck which is well oversized so that it can be sanded to the exact line. On WB #1, I wasn't a big fan of this idea as I had to remove quite a lot of material. Today, I could not thank Hans enough! :D I used every mm of that deck and then had to cut the notches considerably deeper so that I could slide the deck fully home.

So, this is what the dry-fit looks like on the Starboard side with only two push pins to hold the deck down temporarily.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the deck fits this well and for the deck and hull line to be virtually identical. I have a build!!!:D (I went a bit overboard on the notch at Bulkhead #2.)

This picture shows how nicely the deck line follows the sheer of the hull on the starboard side with the upswept at the bow. Note how the planks join at the bow.

Thus, I am happy with the visual lines and fit, but let's go to the ruler.

The widest point on the upper deck measures 7.5cm according to Ab Hoving's plans. Ab builds in 1:75 so that distance converted to the 1:50 scale of the Kolderstok model comes to 11.25 cm.

On the picture it looks like 11.1, but viewed from the top, I get 11.2 ! :)

Very impressive Heinrich. Your construction methods and abilities certainly show in the accuracy of your build. There’s always something new and interesting to learn from your log and posts.
Thank you for the kind words, Roger. So far it feels like I have been fighting the ship the whole way, so I am glad to see that everything lines up and looks OK.

No rest for the wicked. I’ve put to much gripping dust in your box
Correct Hans! Now, my friend, when the aeroplane has gone over at 12, you can walk to the fridge and crack open a Hertog Jan on your hull design!Beer

I have fitted the Port Side of the deck and ...

That is just what the doctor ordered. If I had wanted to spend more time on the fitment I could have gotten the deck to fit even better, but that is not the purpose for now. To think that you have designed a hull that conforms so closely to Ab's interpretation, is just amazing.

The "gap" where the two decks do not meet in the center is NOT a mistake - it shows exactly the amount by which I have widened the hull towards the bow. That is how accurate your deck is shaped. Note that cap rails have also been installed.

And seeing that I have also installed the cap rails, I simply had to pull out the level again.

Thank you, Hans! This is one super-accurate hull!
