HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Heinrich and Anna,

For both of you a very nice christmas, and a good jump into the new year. The Chinese new year will start a bit later (the first of februari when I'm correct) and then you should have been moved into your new appartment, with a new job ahead. Good luck with that!

And a huge thank you for your nice build log here!

Hans
Hans the build log is a joy to compile - it is a splendid kit to work with. Thank you for the nice wishes!

Hi Heinrich.
So far you have done a beautiful and neat work. The planks gives her a very nicely sway. And I'm pretty sure the rest of the hull and build gets just as much love and attention. Which is also my wish for you and Anna.
Regards, Peter
Thank you for the nice words, Peter!

Beautifull done so far Heinrich my friend,
And i wish you and admiral Anna a very nice Christmas , and a very good and healthy New Year, altough you have to wait a little longer then the rest of us

My dear Peter. Thank you so much for the very kind wishes. I will convey your message to the Admiral as well. Actually, I'm lucky, because I get to celebrate two New Years' Days - on the 31st of December/1 January and the Chinese New Year early in February. Thumbsup

By the way - I am still following your build of the Hermione Lafayette and just wanted to say that I am confident you will get those side galleries to come out perfect! Please give all three zeeduivels a BIG hug from uncle Heinrich!

Transom.jpg

Heinrich, once I peeked into the box, I couldn't resist ;)
Nothing is quite finished or glued as yet. Have to get out my very fine brushes and paint the Zwaan.

Also, seasons greetings to you and Anna and calm seas for 2022. Your help and encouragement have been appreciated to get me back into shipbuilding and developing my interest in the Dutch ships. Kudos to Kolderstok for their fine models First Place Metal

Now I should return to the Speeljacht construction.

Ron

Wow Ron!!! That looks brilliant - and what is more - it is totally unique to your build. This is the first WB I have seen with a stern decoration! Thumbsup Yes, peeking into the WB box does strange things to the human mind! ROTF

Thank you so much for your kind and very generous words. If my contributions can help in any way to make the hobby more pleasurable and enjoyable, then I am most grateful for that.

Swan II.jpg
Didn't really like my first Zwaan attempt so I cut another with more definition.

Swan _CNC.jpg

I do not have the skill of Dean62 to hand carve so I used my CNC. Rough cut with a 3/16 dia. bit and finish cut was with a .5mm tapered ball nose cutter.
The stepover on the finish cut was .001 inch per pass.

Ok, I'll quit hijacking Heinrich's log and get back to my project.

@rtibbs You can NEVER hijack my log enough my friend! :DThese are great and valuable contributions to the building of the WB. The second version has visible more definition than the first - well done.

By the way, if you want to paint the stern section surrounding the swan as per the replica below, I think I have found the right color.

Just have a look at the color of the transom and wales on @modelshipbuilder65 (Rick)'s exquisite build of the Royal Caroline. (I can urge you all to have a look at Rick's build log if you want to see some high-class model building. https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/1-30-hms-royal-caroline-build.7586/)

The Blue color Rick used is called Peacock Teal, but clever Heinrich has neglected to ask him from which manufacturer ... o_O

That looks great! Awesome resource! ;)

@Dean62 Thank you Dean! May you and your beautiful family have a very blessed Christmas and a New Year that is endowed with health. By the way, thinking of your granddaughter, I was wondering who is going to be Father Christmas?:)

Hi Ron. Awesome. I admire you guys who can make and craft such detail- I’m still trying to cut a 90• correctly. Brilliant job.

Good morning from a beautiful Cape Town. Heinrich it was your encouragement, assistance and approach to model building which made me look at this hobby differently. This Has brought so much more joy to my building and I Thank you for that. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas or as they say in Melkbosstrand- Geseende Kersfees.

Man, I tell you ... I am so jealous of these guys with their wonderful talents. @rtibbs Ron can start a business on the sideline making Swans for Kolderstok. :) By the way, I am with you on that accurate cutting of a 90 degrees anything!

Grant you make me blush ... but I am eternally grateful for such beautiful sentiments. Thank you so much for that! Geseende Kersfees to you and your family my friend!

Grant, watching logs from you and others on the forum sometimes makes me want to find a different hobby but I’ll keep trying to improve my skills at ship building. Probably at my age it’s to late to start another hobby anyway. :)

Hello Everyone. Work in the Nantong Shipyard continues unabated, but planking below the wales now, means that the going is S-L-O-W.

微信图片_20211222090943.jpg

Even with the planks already laid down, it still sometimes requires a "re-adjustment". Here the push pins on the four bulkheads indicate that such an "adjustment" is in still in progress - hence no sanding at all on the portion below the wales.

微信图片_20211222090934.jpg

The Port Side however, is up to QC and has been provisionally sanded. It is simply amazing to see what light does to the color of the wood. This picture was taken with the natural light coming from the bow's side.

But turning it so that the light squarely hits the side of the ship, creates this effect.

And when it is turned even more, this is what it looks like.

I cannot wait for the day that I can hit this walnut with Tung Oil though - I think it is really going to be all color! Now I still need to put down one plank on either side so that the transom is fully planked and then it's on to the garboard strakes.
