HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

I really love the wood tone on this ship! You mentioned using sandpaper on the stain, I prefer 0000 steel wool to sand between coats or to lighten a stain and give the wood a slightly worn character. Just a thought. Then you can clear coat that with a satin to protect it. As always, many variables in the approach. ;)
Thank you, Dean! It is great to hear from my build partner again. I will certainly give the steel wool a go and compare it to the current finish. I have enough wood left so that I can make a good comparison. Thank for reminding me about the steel wool.

Dear Friends

Whilst I have not been very active on the forum lately (and I do apologize for not always keeping up with everyone's posts and progress), I have not been sitting still. I have been doing a lot of thinking about a next build - I have read numerous detailed build reports of possible candidates and have actually gone so far as to put out feelers with regards to buying two kits. Almost as if predestined, there were certain complications with both "transactions" which I regard as a certain sign that they were not for me.

The exception to the above is the wonderful help and assistance that I have received from Vladimir (@Walterone) and Peter (the owner of Master Korabel) who have gone out of their way to facilitate a deal on Master Korabel's Schooner Polotsk. Gentlemen, I appreciate this, and I cannot speak highly enough of your customer service - I will still build Polotsk, just not next.

In any case, back to the WB.

Mast foot made for the main mast out of Pear wood.

The belaying rack directly in front of the main mast has been placed in position.

The boat has received her oars and tiller.

And then the fun and games started. The fore-and main masts were finished and dry-fitted.

... and a clamp added to the foremast.

As we speak, rigging has officially commenced!

Excellent work my friend, you are on the edge of starting the rigging of the Willem Barentsz :) :)
Thank you, my friend. I have actually started seizing the first 5-in one block of the main stay (grote stag).

Luckily the pictures and drawings of the @Kolderstok kit are brilliant and with @pietsan Piet's build to follow and Ab's notes, rigging per se will not pose any issues. The execution though, is another story! ROTF

Good luck with it my friend, but with the detailed explanation of Pietsan it has to be possible, even with stiff and shaky fingers;)
You have one advantage, for the difficult ropes, you have an Admiral at hand.
Thank you, Peter. Piet's log and "Tips and Weetjes" ("Tips and Know-How-To's) will be invaluable during the rigging process. I will moist certainly rely heavily on the Admiral for help. :)

Hello Heinrich, your fore and main mast look plumb and in line while the bowsprit tip falls exactly in with the others. This is exciting to watch!
Thank you, my friend. Yes, the mast alignment is proper. Kudos for that must go to @Kolderstok. I have used the mast holes and positions on the fore-and main masts exactly as per the kit. The hole and alignment for the mizzen though, is my own invention so I hope that works out OK.

Looks like a fine start. I’ll be watching with interest.

Good to see you found your mojo again - or at least enough of it for work to continue...
Oh yes, the build will continue, regardless of mojo or not - it just makes a huge difference to the enjoyment factor. With the rigging though, it's a new challenge so I will be eager to discover for myself what the fuss is all about. ROTF

I was a fumble fingers and complete beginner when I rigged my Enterprise model. I spent a lot of time drawing lines and highlighting what went where or so I thought. Much later while rigging Krick’s Alert I found I really enjoyed the process. fumble finger knot tying et all. So a challenge yes, Impossible? No. I think you will like doing this part.

I trust I will, my friend. As I've said before, the instructions and drawings are great (as you know) so that will not be an issue, so it's just the doing part that will be the challenge.

Beautiful little details, Heinrich.
Thank you very much, my friend. Your two current builds are awe-inspiring and a great inspiration to me to say. For our friends who may be unaware of the builds that I am referring to, please check this out and be prepared to be amazed.

And if that is enough, there is a third project on its way:
