HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

So, so difficult for you both - just take care.
Now about books, which ones are you looking for?
Dear Roger, that is so kind of you to ask, but as I have said there are various issues at the moment, getting anything in and out of China. However, I will send you a PM. Thank you! It may take a while because it's not just a quick message. You will be privy to how a madman's mind works! ROTF

Yep. But how wonderful that we can still communicate! :)
Totally agree.

Ok, as an aside, when I was deep sea for many years I would write a letter to my wife north-about, heading to the Arabian Gulf. Couldn’t mai it in Iran or similar in those days. Then I would add pages to my long letters south-about and send it ashore hoping it would get mailed as we stood off Cape Town. If the swell was too rough for the offshore boat to get alongside we’d depart with no stores, bunkers or mail but we had reserve of fuel, always. The mail took about ten days from there to get home. So from writing the words “my dearest….” till she got it was about four weeks. Can you imagine? When she replied it was another few weeks. Now we communicate in seconds.

It is absolutely crazy to think how we used to live (and accepted it!) compared to the convenience we now enjoy. And yet, people still talk about the good old days! :)

Well, I just heard that the admiral has contracted Covid so let's see what happens to yours truly!

Dear Friends

This is heaven - a Monday without going to school or teaching (I know, I sound like a school kid :) .) So, in a leisurely fashion, I did a few things today.

In anticipation of the foremast and main mast's (shown here) topgallant shrouds that need to be rigged over the weekend, the 4mm deadeyes were wrapped in 0.5mm brown rope and seized with 0.3mm rope. They were then placed in position temporarily while the first futtock stave (port side) has also been tacked into position. As can be seen from the picture, the topgallant consists of three shrouds for the main and two for the foremast (for that you will have to take my word. :))

The rest of my build time was spent making the mizzen mast, creating its joint, staining it and definitively mounting it.

The rest of the day was spent immersing myself in ancient literature reading about Venetian shipbuilding, the Barbary Pirates, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Knights of the Hospitaller. Go figure! ROTF
Good morning Heinrich. Looking good!! Very good!!! Putting a “flame thrower” to the fluff can be adventurous for sure. Here is my experience : I initially used a candle however my bobstay ignited . Redo was interesting to say the least. I then flicked a lighter numerous time quickly and this worked a treat. Be careful on the natural (white) lines as these (both with candle and lighter) can discolour. Do some testing off the ship first to check how your thread reacts. Luckily my natural lines had little fluff.

As you showed previously on other models of the WB, I believe the “white “ will not appear so stark as you progress with the rigging and the sails. It is going to beautiful Heinrich.

Well your Christmas was well spent and clearly most enjoyable. Your WB is turning into a special model my friend. I sincerely hope the Covid is not to severe for Anna and by the grace of God you don’t get it. Cheers Grant

Thank you for the very kind words, re the build, my friend. You have reaffirmed my idea to use a lighter for the fluff-removal. I am actually quite happy with the white ropes and believe that when the running rigging and sails go on, their effect will be much reduced.

I will give Anna your regards - thank you for the concern. She is obviously at her apartment so whether I will have a rigging partner this weekend remains to be seen. I often joke and say I am too stupid to contract any disease, but one needs to be careful here.

There are no good old days my friend.
Never have been, and never will be.

We hope that your Admiral has a quick recovery and that you won't be infected my friend, wish Anna all the best, and we hope that you'll stay safe
Yes, my friend, I suppose the good old days are a bit of a fairy tale. Thank you for your kind wishes - I will convey them to Anna. I just hope I have my rigging/threading expert back this weekend! :)

Hello Heinrich, this is not good news, neither the situation in the country that we have been following in the news for some time and now that your wife has been infected. I hope that you both survive everything well.
Hi Tobias. The situation here is not good. The streets are so empty that it almost looks like a scene in one of those zombie movies - no cars, no people, all quiet. Thank you for your caring words - they are much appreciated.

Forse non è affatto una cattiva idea! ROTF
