HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Hello, my Dear Friends on this Christmas Day. If I have not done so personally, please accept my wishes for a most blessed Christmas to all of you and your families. As Christmas is a non-event for me at the moment in China, I am spending my day working on the rigging of the Willem Barentsz.

The main mast shrouds and forestay have all been completed. Enjoy the pics.

As @GrantTyler Grant would say - just a fun picture.

And lastly an overview picture taken outside.

Tomorrow I will start on the two belaying racks that still need to be done and I will start on making the mizzen mast.

A most blessed day further and don't eat too much!

I advise you to burn the lanyards of the Yufers. It is necessary to remove the fluffiness. And paint the yufers and lanyards themselves black. All the cables of the standing rigging on the ships were abundantly lubricated with shooting range.

Hi Andrey

I have seen the juffers and lanyards painted black on other ship builds, so that is certainly good advice. On Dutch ships, however, they were not painted. Below is a picture of the replica.

Unpainted jufferblokken and the color of the lanyards is actually the same as the rest of the standing rigging.

On Hoving's model the juffers and lanyards are also unpainted and again we see that the colour of the lanyards is essentially the same as that of the rest of the standing rigging. Why the kit has included such a light-colored rope to be used on the lanyards, I have no idea. I know about the old argument of lighter colored ropes for the running rigging and that there is a debate as to whether the lanyards are part of the running or standing rigging - but in my opinion they are part of the standing rigging and therefore the color should be the same.

I will run a flame over the rope to remove the fluffiness. (Just bear in mind that the close up of the lanyards is with 5 magnification :) .)

Your ropes are made extremely neat and tidy my friend, and i hope that you and your admiral will have an enjoyable day
Thank you very much my friend - your kind words are much appreciated, and I will pass them on to the admiral. I am taking the rigging slowly (there is no rush) in an effort to do it as neatly as I can.

All the best for you and your admiral Heinrich. Enjoy your time in the shipyard.
Christmas is a non event for me this year and I’m hoping the new year will bring a new perspective to me and I can obtain a new normal for me.
Thank you very much for the well wishes, Ron. I can well understand that Christmas this year could not and cannot be easy for you. I think you have touched on a very important point re the "perspective" issue. That is something that plays such a vital role in our lives and often a small change in perspective can make the world of difference. I hope and pray with all my heart that 2023 will be a year in which you can make that shift, my friend. Stay strong!

Well spoken Heinrich.

I have enjoyed your latest research and discussion on the mizzen stay. With Dutch ships from that era one keeps groping in the dark.
Luckily there were marine artists in that era.

I hope you have a wonderful and productive christmas holiday.

Thank you, Herman - I am very happy if you enjoyed the mizzen stay discussion and found it useful.

I am still astounded by the ignorance the Dutch showed in documenting their ship builds - case in point is the name of Barentsz's ship. I am now reading the original "Architectura Navalis ..." by Joseph Furrtenbach which was published in the 1620s - 150 years earlier than Chapman's one. The detail in which he describes the building of ships is nothing short of astounding. Sure, you still have to dig, know where to look, do a fair amount of translation and convert old measurements into metric units, but if you are willing to go to the trouble, the data is there.

Dear Friends

This is heaven - a Monday without going to school or teaching (I know, I sound like a school kid :) .) So, in a leisurely fashion, I did a few things today.

In anticipation of the foremast and main mast's (shown here) topgallant shrouds that need to be rigged over the weekend, the 4mm deadeyes were wrapped in 0.5mm brown rope and seized with 0.3mm rope. They were then placed in position temporarily while the first futtock stave (port side) has also been tacked into position. As can be seen from the picture, the topgallant consists of three shrouds for the main and two for the foremast (for that you will have to take my word. :))

The rest of my build time was spent making the mizzen mast, creating its joint, staining it and definitively mounting it.

The rest of the day was spent immersing myself in ancient literature reading about Venetian shipbuilding, the Barbary Pirates, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Knights of the Hospitaller. Go figure! ROTF

Wow, a very productive day. I think you enjoyed your ”time off”. I’ve read a lot of literature on the Teutonic, Hospitaller and the Templars knights. Fascinating history.

That is indeed a fascinating history, Jan. And of course, everything that I read was part of ship research, so I also learnt a heck of a lot as far as that was concerned.

Wonderful work as usual Heinrich. However, this time aside from complimenting you on the model, I hope you and Anna are staying really, really safe. The news we are seeing is troubling to say the least. When we have nasty storms on the east coast of Canada we “hunker down”, so my friend hunker down :).

Thank you for the kind words about the build, Roger and for your care. The situation is serious - I am just staying inside my apartment without any contact with anyone - save the admiral - and even that is monitored as we go along, because of the nature of her work. She comes into contact with many people each day and without any formal testing anymore, we don't know whether we are infected or not. There are books that I want to order, but as I have mentioned before, PayPal for individuals has been suspended and getting anything in and out of the country is also a challenge.

So, so difficult for you both - just take care.
Now about books, which ones are you looking for?
