HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Very nice planking Heinrich, I wish I had those skills; planking is the one aspect (okay, there are many others too) of ship modelling that I can't master just yet. Your WB hull has progressed very well indeed, much as we all expected it to. Well done! Thumbsup
Thank you very much for the kind words, Mark! I would like to think that "reading" a hull and planking are my strong points. What helps tremendously is if you know the lines that the planking has to follow, and I obviously know this little ship inside out. However, the oak is a completely unknown factor which is proving to be quite the challenge. :)

Good morning Mark. Heinrich is like a “Jedi master” when it comes to planking- he has the force no doubt. However, I have just looked at your Fly first planking layer which is outstanding. You have skills my friend.....maybe not a “Jedi master” just yet. Cheers Grant

How about a family pic?

Good morning Heinrich- cool picture- I think the older sister was very concerned when you decided to place the Her sibling on the balcony- brave Heinrich. Both are becoming beautiful ship models- you can certainly give yourself a heap of praise for these. Cheers Grant

You're right Grant, I can see the force is strong with Heinrich. I bet he uses a light sabre to bend and shape his planks as well, just to show off ROTF

Hello Dear Friends

On July 14th, the first plank was laid down. Seventeen days later and the stern has been closed in on both sides. First, three conventional pics:

And then we got daring. Placed on the balcony railing of the 11th floor in the late afternoon light.

The WB looks great on the balcony in the sun on the last pictures, Heinrich. And good to see she didn't have any nerves to pose like that. Trust that she is in good hands.
Regards, Peter

Thank you very much for the kind comments, Peter. No, she wasn't nervous at all - the same could not be said about me though! ROTF

Very nice work Heinrich, the oak looks realy good on this little ship. See your ship is not afraid of heights being on the edge of your balcony.
Thank you very much Maarten. I am really glad that you like the oak - it makes the extra work worthwhile. You are right, she is not scared of heights at all - but the builder/photographer is! :)

Hello Everyone.

There is not a huge amount of progress to report, but like I said to @shota70 Shota - "slowly, but surely..."

On both sides, the garboard strakes (red) have been laid down as well as their immediate neighbors (green). On the Starboard Side an insert and a third plank (yellow) has also been installed.

Spot the insert! ROTF Getting it to fit like that, took many attempts and at least two hours of finishing.

Starboard Side: Overview

In closing I want to thank each one of you for following along, and for your tremendous support, your motivating comments and critique where warranted. This is what makes this a truly special build log and what spurs me on to try my best. It is sincerely appreciated. Thank You!

That it is Jan, Despite this being my second time around, I still find it difficult to read this hull below the wales. On the last pic, it looks as if the two lower wales run absolutely straight while we both know just how much of a sheer they have.

True, those two have a couple of incredible bends in a very small space.

Beautifully accurate fitting of the hull planks.

Question: the gap moving toward the bow seems to narrow and then widen. I'm hoping that is parallax from the camera angle or is there something odd happening there?
Thank you kindly, Paul. You have made another great observation about the gap that "chokes" and then opens up. On WB#1 it was no parallax - unfortunately - and I had to implement some pretty innovative planking. On this hull, it seems a lot better, but it is unmistakably still there. I will see how I am going to pull that line straighter.

Hmm. How about beginning that with the plank you just laid? I'm certainly not qualified to advise you - but from my beginner's perspective if that plank was part of the solution then gap management becomes less dramatic.

What is your diagnosis? Should the garboard strake have been terminated further back from the bow (before it took a turn 'up')?

Thank you for your patience with me as I learn.
