HMS GRANADO 1:48 scale PoF CAF Model by Keith

Hi all. The transom planking is now done and the outside hull has been given the Clou treatment which has brought out the colour nicely l think. Next step will be the stern Gallery windows, which will give those transom timbers a bit more support l hope

Good morning Keith. You certainly own these POF models. Wonderful work. Cheers Grant

Thank you all for your interest and comments. I really appreciate it. This is such a good kit to work on. Every stage is a pleasure to see things coming together. Now it's on to the quarterdeck cabin bulkhead assemblies. By dry fitting the first couple of walls, l can see it seems to fit pretty well but must keep an eye on the accuracy of the positions for the cut outs of the deck beams as l go along. Each wall assembly is made up of 3 x 1 mm sections laminated together, as are the doors. A great idea enabling the paneling effect to be created in the various sections. A technique that is a bit challenging, though with a bit more practice, shouldn't look too shabby.

Thank you very much Paul. Glad you like it. A lot of delicate work involved here but l'm happy with the result too!

Continuing with the cabin walls and bulkheads. The first bulkhead and walls are now complete, with the 2nd bulkhead ready to begin. A quick dry fit shows they are fitting in their positions well as l have come to expect with this kit. I'm very pleased with the result so far. Excellent work from CAF Model in their design of this kit

Nice work Keef, the thickness of those cabin walls falls right in line with the rest of the stocky sturdy members of the ship's substructure.

Thanks Daniel. I think the wall translate to about 6 inches thick in real life

More W.I.P. pics of the quarter deck cabin wall and bulkheads which are now complete and treated. They now just need to be fitted. There are so many things that have to be right for them to fit perfectly first time round. Dry fitting has shown fore and aft position to be very good, but there seems to be a slight error in the placement of the lower deck clamps which has made the deck beams that these walls sit on fractionally to high, only less than 1 mm, but this means the quarter deck beams don't quite fit snugly into their cut outs, so some small adjustments will be needed to the heights of the walls and bulkheads to compensate

All the bulkheads and cabin walls are now fitted into place forming the cabins. The quarter deck beams are also fitted overhead, bringing to an end this section of the build. l was very pleased to find only some minor adjustments were needed for everything to fit nicely into place. l shall probably dispense with all main and quarter deck planking to have an unrestricted view of all the hull and deck beams but will plank the forward quarter deck bulkhead and entrance hatch to the cabin area from the main deck

Looking good Keef! You do love these POF kits, and it shows!
Thank you Paul. l'm always going on about how l like these POF kits, this one in particular. l just like the details of how these old ships were constructed and l can appreciate the many skills involved, especially considering the tools available at the time were not particularly that sophisticated

Beautiful Keef. The density of wood inside the hull is amazing to me. By that I mean there doesn't seem to be much walking or living space below deck, it's all heavy beams.
Thank you for your compliments Daniel. l agree there's not a lot of living space down below. Not having a copy of A.O.T.S. for the Granado l don't know how accurately the cabins are portrayed or whether some of it is just the interpretation of the kit designer, nor do l know the number of crew would have been on board

I like your build very much. One day id like to do a Granado too.

The wood is quite strongly figured - I'm not so keen on that.
Thank you for your comments and interest Smithy. l feel you would enjoy this kit :)
