HMS Ontario 1780 scale 1:32 POB full version

your request for a cross section build of the Ontario has been noted and it is on the to do list of the SOS/MSB design team.

The design team is made up guys to do kit and project design either for a group or one off projects. We also work with laser cutters and 3D printers. Because it take a lot of time and effort we do not do in depth research. This brings up the Ontario cross section project.

in the book Legend of the Lake 22 gun brig ONTARIO a set of plans were drawn by John McKay. These plans were drawn to the standard ship building methods used in England at naval shipyards. Keep in mind the ONTARIO was built in 1780 in the wilderness of the Great Lakes with limited supplies, carpenters and at a make shift shipyard. Building the ONTARIO to the standards of craftsmanship used in English yards may be questionable.

the ONTARIO could have been built the way McKay drew his plans or it could have been built with double frames. Size and spacing of frames is a guess. The only way to know for sure how the ONTARIO was framed is for someone to go down and look at the wreck and document the nail pattern in the planking. The odds of that happening is slim to none, for one reason the wreck is being covered with Zebra Mussel.

it is your call as to how you want the cross section designed

some builders are concerned about historical accuracy while someone else is more concerned with the "art" of the model.

historical accuracy in this case is a fluid thing what is true today may be proven otherwise as new research uncovers more facts.

another thing to consider is at what point is being cross sectioned. Most every cross section model is at midship but maybe from the stern to the last couple gun ports may be interesting because you can do the inside of the stern cabin.
 
ok Zoltan I can do the drawings for that section of the hull.

next question do you want to frames to look like Mckays plans. That would be 2 single filler frames and a double followed by 2 more single frames so on and so forth. OR do you want all the frames to be double frames?

I can do a 3D mock up of both framing systems and post the files
 
Hello Dave,the framing system can be discussed with Mike,do you have the interior drawn up like in the McKay's plan(not the framing)?
 
It is impressive how good preserved the vessel is after all these years under water. The cold water is helping very much.......are there any intentions to save her? As i saw the photos of the shipwreck were made in 2008....
 
They can’t bring her up,the Brittish declared it s a war grave,they are also not telling the exact location either.
 
Hello everyone, I started to make a cardboard prototype in 1/48 to see how the keel and bulkheads fitting together and make some correction if there any errors.
Cutting out the keel and bulkheads from paper and transferring the shape later on a project board.

Now it is starting....... I will sit down and see with big interest, what the future will bring.

Hello Uwe, thanks for visiting my build log, this is a prototype of a prototype, the plans still needs some corrections and details to be developed to make it suitable for building the model , like the stern for an exemple.
Mike41 is a great help with this.

This is an excellent way to check the bulkheads without spending a lot of time and money, you are off to a great start.

Hi Zoltan,
This is a surprising development!
When you can install all the bulkheads on the center board take photos of the top, sides and ends of the model and send them to me with notes on the problem areas. This will not be a large problem.

Where are you getting the bulkhead's shape from? If you ate using the shapes on the plane, they could be wrong.
With my experience getting the bulkheads profile, it is always best to redraw them from the waterline plans.
You will be amazed at the difference.
Just putting my penny's worth in.

This is much slower than I thought ,takes longer to cut the frames out,once I finished I post the images here and I send them to you.
