HMS Royal Caroline kit ZHL 1/30

The body of my Caroline is now polished with beewax and the time has come to give her some arms. Again these are made from boxwood cut in roughly the right dimensions in this case for her left arm which is held forward with open hand to held an orb.

I start with setting out the approximate shape of the arm and hand, fine tuning very slowly to a shape of an arm with a hand.
20190618_195152.jpg
Now I will start to fine tuning the details like the fingers handpalm and arm. And them dry fitting.
20190618_205154.jpg
Dry fitting shows you the correct dimensions which in this case is still to big, she looks like a mine worker.:).
Reducing size step by step is now the solution. As said before everything removed can't be put back, so being careful is key.

This is her currently, some minor fine tuning is needed to make her hand slightly smaller, but we are getting there.

I think this is much better! While on the first photo it appears a bit oversized, the second photo proves the opposite, It may be the fact that wood is a different color. Soon, she will have a second hand!

As promised this thread on carving wil take a view posts. Today step by step the second arm.
First again from 4 mm boxwood the very rough outline.
20190620_185646.jpg
On that I make an approximate sketch of the top and side view.
20190620_191513.jpg
Followed cutting the outlines with a knive.
20190620_193402.jpg
Then starting the first carving with a carving bit.

Fine tuning
20190620_201219.jpg
And reducing size

Then finishing the arm and wrist and dry fit it to the body

Back to fine tuning, dry fitting, fine tuning etc.
Creating this end result when waxed.

On het hands she will held the regalia of the English crown, a part of the British crown jewels.
In her left hand an orb, a golden ball with a cross on top. In her right hand a scepter.
The originals from the time of george the 2nd and caroline are still in use till today with only a slight difference in the scepter which now holds one of the biggest cut diamonds in the world, the cullinan.
See the originals below.

In the kit the orb is a canon ball and the scepter a belay pin, so not as royal as you expect. This means making them from scrap.
I made a beginning with the orb from 5mm boxwood as in scale the orb is a 5mm bal.
20190620_213610.jpg
To make it better suitable to carve it I drilled a hole in the bottom and glued it on a stick.
20190620_215453.jpg
The stick is temporary and is removed after finishing, but thats for later.

Again a baby step. The orb is round at 5mm so after this time to make a cross on top.
20190621_162759.jpg
The notch at the top is stil 5 by 5 mm which I grinded back to 1mm. Followed by creating a cross using a fine cutting disc.
20190621_164723.jpg
Fine tuning with fine files and then cut a ring around and punching some small dips simulating the precious stones.
20190621_170006.jpg
After waxing compared with the kit supplied ball. The pin is used to fix it to het left hand in which I drilled a small hole.

E voila, caroline with her orb, onlythe scepter to follow.

And I found an additional hour to make the scepter.
First I measured the proper size from a picture and in 1:30 scale it is 26 mm x 1,65 mm.
For this I saw a piece of boxwood along its grain at 1,7 x 1,7 mm.
20190621_202046.jpg
This I pulled through a drawplate to round 1,7 mm.
This piece I put in my proxxon drill and created a mini woodlathe.
20190621_202939.jpg
With the use of files I shaped the scepter, finally cut a crown in the top with a cutting disc and drilled a hole in the top where the gemstone is located.
Compared to the kit supplied scepter this is the result.

After waxing I mounted in her hand clamped by her hand but secured witgh a tiny drop of ca.

Yes caroline is fully carved and finished.
Now two putty need to be carved helding the crown above het head. But before that the SB side should be finished follow by the bow section.

After finishing Caroline I started with the scheg in Dutch, think in English cutwater.
It is supported with two big horizontal knees on both sides. In the kit only one was suplied so I created a second one from a piece of pear.
To curvature is created with steam and a solder iron.
20190622_114431.jpg
After creating the correct curvature it is filed in the correct fit and sanded before colouring it with Ecoline.

20190622_122633.jpg
A second knee is prepared in the same way.
The knees are glued on the rear of the carving supplied with the kit.
This carving I thinned trimmed and carved on the rear. The forward part I cut of the main carving, finished, waxed and is glued to the stem below caroline.

The knees are glued to the rear of the carving.
20190623_112551.jpg
To fit it to the hull I added 6 small dowels.
20190623_141944.jpg
After waxing the carving and oiling the Ecoline coloured pear wood it can be dry fitted.
