HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Great news my friend and great service by Zoly. It is always nice to receive a little parcel! :)

Hi Grant, just catching up on your build. Your mast and spar/yard work are really awesome looking. Neat, clean, good-looking joinery.
So, what kind of new toys did you get from Zoly?

Hello Daniel, thank you very much. Not really toys, some blocks and ropes. Such small things but really are so much better than those I got with the kit. Cheers

Good morning- super excited as I got a package from Dry Dock Models. Fantastic quality.

I must shout out a big thank you to @zoly99sask for making this work for me to get the product to the town of Melkbosstrand. Went out of his way and it is much appreciated.

Thank you Grant ,i am glad it worked out with the shipping issue and you like the blocks.

Good evening- I know Heinrich is going to give me detention for this. When I started here on SOS I was clueless (still am) and Heinrich’s interest in my build and how he engaged with me (I know he does this with so many others) is a major influence in my passion for this hobby. His logs are an education all in themselves. A special person for sure.
Hi Grant,

I am just playing Sunday morning catchup reading some great build threads and yours remains one of my favourites. You are doing a fine build and your interesting, informative posts are a lot of fun to follow.

I have to totally agree with your comments about Heinrich above. How he finds time to monitor, comment and help others while building his own models is beyond me. I think he posts during the day and builds in his sleep ROTF .

Hello Roger. Thank you. Yes I have always wondered how Heinrich does it ...now we know

Grant that is a lot of work that you have done and it looks marvelous. Just keep at it and the day when they will all be installed, will arrive sooner than what you think.

I don' know how extended are yor rigging plans. On this site there are plans " HMS Victory 1/100 with recommended blocks" so you can compared it with yours.Revell,Airfix 180-225 with recommended blocks is also worth checking
Good day. I have been looking at various rigging plans for my build. It is particularly important to establish the number and positioning of blocks on the mast etc. prior to fitting these. I appreciate this link and have found these useful for planning. In particular the sequence for the rigging. This is one area I have a feeling I am opening myself up for trouble. Thanks Grant

There's a thread on polish forum about Vicory's rigging. Lots of pictures and in the last resort you can always use auto-translator

sorry, the research must be done on texts of the time not from modern books, each maneuver (top 9 has a thickness and a breaking load based on its activity

This is true- way above my pay grade though. I have looked at the site @WojtasS sent and it is an excellent reference for me. Franks PDF he sent me is brilliant and scientific and factually correct however I think I will be dead before I finish if attempted this. Has been helpful in my mast building as well. Thank you guys. Appreciate your help. Cheers Grant

Yes. I agree, but. People who have such knowledge wouldn't elaborate regular kit. They would rather build whole ship from scratch. And this thread on koga is enough for a beginner. I can't say it's easy, but for people who know diffrences in rigging in diffrent years of ships' service it could be unsatisfactory. What I've read this guide is based mostly on The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by Longridge and scaled to 1/96 so it's far more than mantua's instructions

Totally agree with Heinrich's sentiment Grant. There are times when I look at what still needs to be done, hang my head, and walk back to the fridge for another beer. Then there are those days when you get to look back in wonder at what you have achieved, at the parts of your build that you had thought so complex previously. It's all swings and roundabouts and I can feel it in my bones that all your yards and booms have no doubt whatsoever that there shipbuilder will sling them all into their correct places in time. Great work Thumbsup

Good morning. Whole heartedly agreed. It is perfect for my application and even then there are one or two rigging processes which I cannot replicate. This has solved my rigging plan and sequence issue. Thank you, you have been a “lifesaver”. Cheers Grant
