Kingfisher 1770 1:48 POF

No museums though my kids are already talking about how they will get rid of the Vasa when I am dead (can it just go in the garbage can?).
I sure hope you're not encouraging your offspring into dumping your beautiful Vasa, that's barbarism!
Seriously though, I'm of the opinion that your current build should not end up in a forgotten corner, but instead deserves to be displayed in plain view.

Adi, Mirek, Grant, Gunter, Allan, Herman, Daniel, Jan, and Jeff - and to all the likes - my thanks for your encouragement and kind words.

And now mounted on the ship:

That was quite a project with lots of small custom bits and baubles... I'm happy to see it in my wake (I must have been thinking about these guns for a few months before I finally built up the courage to attempt them).

And, as always, thanks for stopping by to see what I'm up to!
Super stunning work there Paul. I'd comment more and often but then it would be repetition of SOS master modelers comments. Totally admire your work and your constant striving for perfection. Cheers.

Thanks much! No need for you or anyone to feel like they need to post. I'm just doing this for fun :) while looking for tips on how to build an interesting ship model. I appreciate your visit!

injection molded (I didn't know that referred to a specific manufacturing process). I was using the term generically to mean they were not turned on a lathe nor were they printed
Hi Paul,
I see how it would be confusing if you have not worked with injection and cast molding systems. :) The short version is that injection molding forces the material such as liquid plastic into the molds. Casting is merely pouring the liquid into the mold. The first systems for cast molding I studied and tried were two piece molds that are very well described by Bernard Frolich in his book The Art of Ship Modeling. The only reason I did not love it was that it left a seam, albeit small, that had to be filed or sanded to get rid of it. Still a very useable system. I went to single silicone molds and got rid of the problem. If you have not seen it already you might find the subject here at SoS https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/making-cannon.14545/ post #4 interesting. Just another way to skin the proverbial cat.

A quick update... I fabricated my first (ever) working hinges on the Kingfisher gun port lids. At 1:48 they were doable, though I feel like mine are a bit large and thus out of scale. I might have been able to make them smaller, but I already (embarrassed Redface) spent more than a day on these two hinges (along with a nonfunctional set for the vertical forward lid).

I'm glad I gave them a try... though I'm not sure the ROI worked out in my favor.

That's enough metalwork for a while...

Fantastic hinges Paul and yes, they do look just a tad too big though not sure I would have noticed had not you mentioned the possibility of the scale being off.
Are the movable hatches the right size for the opening? They seem a little too small.

That paints a nice picture. In due time I will have to provide about 90 gun lids with hinges.. Well, we always have the nice job of fixing the rat lines to look forward to ROTF.

May I ask Paul, what do you use for soldering the metal parts? An electric soldering unit or a gas burner/silver solder?

I'm not even close to knowing what the folk here know about ships and scale. Like everyone else, I like the hinges very much. I couldn't tell you if they are the perfect scale or not, but I'm sure if this (me) 5' 5" bobber watcher held them, they would make me look quite fat.

I'm particular too about many of my hobbies, but I always say I leave a bit of room for improvement with every finished project to keep me on my toes.

do you have to handpaint all that golden decorations on the blue paint?
Wow. That looks very nice
Thanks, Cap'n Jack. Yes, the decorations were painted.

Wow! Terrific, as always. Thumbsup Thumbsup
Much appreciated, Peter!

That are a set of nice hingen. They look good. You did them like this https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...s-and-tricks-as-per-sergey-trubchaninov.3086/

That's nothing, I spent 3 days on the lions nose and it still can't smell with it.
Ooh! I love that posting about Sergey's approach to metalwork! Bookmarked!

Strange that your lion can't smell. He looks so real I can smell him from here ROTF.

Oh my... 90 gun-port-lid hinges (x2) with all the components. At my pace of work that would have taken me 3 months...

Gas torch with silver solder paste - usually 'easy' solder. Silver solder 'blackens' with Casey's so for me it is the obvious choice.

Ha! My self-talk did include: I'll do them better next time...

DANIEL! After four years of watching me work did you really just ask if I made something the wrong size??? Have you not seen that I am an exacting perfectionist who is willing to go the extra mile to get everything just right!!!

Really!?!?

Actually, the one on the left is too narrow ROTFROTFROTF. I hate that you noticed ROTFROTFROTF.
