There’s been lots of test fitting, but everything looks OK to my eye. I bought a small Proxxon disc sander a few months ago and it’s been really helpful in making the final adjustments.

One more detail. La Renommee had iron knees supporting the lower deck beams. In the kit, they are made of photo-etch and 0.8 mm brass wire soldered together. Each knee is different because of the changing angle between beams and the ceiling planking throughout the length of the ship.



I’m a novice at soldering, so I had some clean up work with files. But after some Brass Black, I think they’ll do.



I’ve only put them on the port side because of my plan to cut away frames on the other side. The knees won’t be visible in this part of the ship which is a shame, but I think the ones in the hold a midships will be with a bit of luck.

Grant, Paul and Brad, yes, the knees are a lovely little detail. Tom at CAF really hastried to replicate everything in the monograph.

Next is the pump well which enclosed the main mast. Two shot lockers are incorporated forward of this well.

Here are the walls made out of 1.2 x 5 mm strips:



There are full size plans showing all the elevations.

A few contributions were made to the swear jar cleaning the charring off the rungs and window frame in the forward compartment, but I think it looks passable.





There’s a small hatch above the forward compartment to gain access and the pumps go down the aft compartment. It must have been pretty claustrophobic climbing down to inspect it…

Christian and Peter, I’m glad you are enjoying my log. I’ve been retired for almost two years and ship modelling is perhaps my main interest. My only regret is I didn’t start sooner.

Fricap, thank you. I only use my iPhone to take pictures, but there’s a lot going on with this model, so I’m never short of photos to share. Occasionally, I see something in a photo which I didn’t see when working on the ship and have to go back to fix!

In the bow, I have been working on the breast hook for the lower deck, and two braces. I have also put in the beams for the cable tier (the lower level) and deck for the bosun’s stores and coal bunker (the upper level).

The deck for the upper level will need an opening for the fore mast. It is going to be fun trying to fit the decking in that area…

Here is the deck for the bosun’s stores:





I glued the middle eight planks together off the ship in order to cut the opening for the fore mast. I then added pairs of planks to each side until finished and then put the entire deck in place. The braces and mast step made for a complicated deck shape, but once I’d settled on this method, things went reasonably smoothly. There’s no missing planks in this deck as this is the lowest level and there is little detail underneath.

I roughly cut the opening for the foremast with a series of holes with a small drill bit before finishing it by hand with a knife. There’s only a few millimetres between the deck and mast step, so I can see the foremast will fit without any problems.

As with the stern decking, I didn’t bevel the edges planks where they meet the ceiling planking.

There’s one final thing I should mention. The deck overhangs the aft most beam by 1.5 mm to accommodate uprights notched into it. I discovered this almost by accident when I just looking at the plans. When I looked closer, it was shown a few steps further on in the instructions.

I soldered the body together, but the vent and the latch are glued. The door is swung on 0.5 mm wire and will open and close. Unfortunately, the Brass Black didn’t quite colour the solder as well as the brass, but it’s a minor point. Oh dear, I think I have too much time on my hands…
