Le Rochefort 1:36 build by Tony P

I look at it as not failure or giving up I see it as a learning experience. There’s many many reasons to stop this build and start another and I won’t bother you guys with the psychological but, here goes a few.
The Scale is too small for my liking. I don’t want to deal with very small work I did enough of that with my plastic ship modeling. I Never should have taken the “shortcut” of trying to save time by making my frames with the Hahn method. I should have cut them all out the proper way like I did with the Blandford section. This was the biggest mistake. I think I even knew it then but I did it anyway. I really wanted to build a solid hull ala Dr Mike or plank on thick frame ala Igor but I thought the plank in frame open style would be more appealing to me. It isn’t. I wanted to do this particular ship because of the practicum as I didn’t want to go into a build without detailed instructions. Other than that the subject didn’t really interest me. I could go on but you get the idea.
Very true Tobias if it’s not fun there’s no sense. I’ve had a few projects before that became a chore instead of fun and I didn’t think twice about just scrapping it and starting something new. Thanks to Dave at The Lumberyard for the wood. The remainder will get used in my next project. I’ve been researching and reading a lot so I just have to narrow it down to which ship I want to tackle next.

Excellent recap Tony. Sorry it didn’t work out the way you wanted but take the new knowledge and experience on to the next project. As Mythbusters were fond of saying on their TV show, “Failure is always an option! But the knowledge gained is never wasted.”
Best wishes on whatever direction you go.

Thanks. I couldn’t start over then I’d really hate it !!

Seriously thinking about starting anew in 1/24. Same ship but the size difference will help me feel I’m not doing the same thing over again.

I like that plan… when I started over I looked really hard at going with 1/24 scale until I realized that just the hull would be nearly 3 feet long! With the bowsprit it’s nearly 4 feet! Personally I would love working in a larger scale I just don’t have the room… :(

Yea we’ll see. Have to figure out material costs and see how I can use the Beech I have here.

I already purchased the plan and seriously thinking of going that direction... the length might be an issue and I have to think about cost of wood off course... but keeping my current build as a nice learning curve...

Yea it’s big but hopefully it gets another home like my Blandford section did. I don’t have room for it here. Yes steep learning curve it is too. We learn from our mistakes !

... the dark and emptiness here..., the desk is super clean and sounds... there are no reminders about the Le Rochefort build as the abandoned model sits on top of the HP printer (?)... and only the number of Green mats, those superpower Green Mats gives me the confidence I need. Only one question is noisily swirling in my head: What should I build next? ROTF ROTF ROTF ROTF

Yeah, it is unfortunate but the decision made. I know from my personal experience when something is not playing on the same sheet of music, it goes to the trash. In my last build, the Leudo, I couldn't glue 2 planks for 3 days, the result was the entire hull (almost finished) became an airplane only for one and a single flight and landed in pieces in the trash bin. After that, I no longer built planes.

Exactly, I’ve done it before, sometimes that’s the only way to go. Start new and fresh. Learn.

Hi Tony,
I respect your decision. Often it is better to start something new, as far as the scale is concerned I would like to quote G. Delacroix, which I heard from him in Evian. "1:36 is the best scale, not too small but not too big to show details". I was able to see La Diligent in real life in 1:24 scale and it is huge. Anyway, I look forward to something new from you.

Thanks, yes fresh mind and fresh project. Agree 1/36 and bigger, ship dependent of course.

I understand how you feel about this. I think I would have done the same. I think you will be happier with the larger scale (which is always easier to work on).

Thanks Donnie, yes indeed. Trudging through something that really can’t be fixed is fruitless. Fresh start is much better. Live and learn !
