Le Soleil Royal ZHL Build Log [COMPLETED BUILD]

Oh, no! There are many things on this ship that are not part of the building instructions of this model. In fact the kit did not come with sails, but I have included them in my plans.
Does that mean that many details of the model - e. g. these eyebolts - are not mentioned in the building instructions, not even with a hint on the plans? Strange...

You're right, Vfordyce, new builders need to know that the instructions and kits in general leave out MANY details that you can added with a few minutes of scratch building. Instructions are frequently incorrect. That's why a builder's research and willingness to stray outside the directions are so important.

Deck ringbolts for train tackles are usually not in the instruction just as train tackles and gun tackles are often missing from the instructions. Kits make simplified models. You have to fix them up.

Then for my Confederacy I have been provided very good instructions!
Confederacy is one of the most detailed and accurate kits. Even so, if you go through a couple books on frigates, you will find ways to add more details. If you take up this challenge, post the items you find and are going to add to your model. Watch how fast that list goes up with more reading! :D

So it seems to me that I have been very lucky to have the Confederacy chosen as my first historical ship kit.....however, each manufacturer promotes his kits as "highly detailed", and I would have supposed a kit like the SR to be highly detailed and accurate

Poor accuracy is definitely the case for the ZHL kit. I would say that ZHL instructions are very very limited and sometimes non existent.
I am not sure about the other SR kits (de Agostini, Mantua, Heller). Are they any better?

Hi Gilbertm, I am of the same opinion that the kits do not reflect the 100/100 ship

Except from Model Shipways I don' t have any experience with other manufacturers. What I can say is that ZHL belongs to the list of manufacturers banned on Modelshipworld.

I don’t know for a fact that any of these companies are “pirates.” I prefer to withhold judgment. We at SoS prefer not to get into these sorts of arguments. I think the administrators would echo my feelings. The arguments have been attempted before, and they have no support from the members. We are a group who likes to build ships and we are dedicated to the encouragement and building up of others. We are not here to argue which builders are acceptable and which are not. We love to bash them all! If I limited myself to one or two companies, I wouldn’t get to build the ship I want. And I’m starting to enjoy researching and adding my own touches. Thank you for watching, Werner and contributing. I think I’ll take the advice and just add the eyebolts. Hast du ein Baulog hier in SOS?

Hello Vic,
I never intended to disqualify any builder or manufacturer, but reading the previous posts I remembered the list on MSW. Perhaps I better should have not mentioned it here....
What I was just wondering about was the discussion about the eyebolts for the train tackles, and I was astonished that it was no issue in the instructions......I saw that you have already discovered my Confederacy build log.

We know for a fact that some manufacturers have copied instructions and kits and undercut the original kit designers, but unlike MSW, we do not take it upon ourselves to persecute customers from buying kits from those manufacturers because most of them are unaware of how those kits were procured. MSW has a standing policy that certain vendors (notably Chinese) cannot be praised or even mentioned in their forum on pain of being banned. Their forum, their rules. Although we do recognize that kit copiers are hurting the model industry, we only try to inform members when evidence that a kit is copied or "pirated", and do not interfere with their decision on what to buy or speak about. I am also an MSW member, and follow their rules on their site, which is the way to go. I personally choose not to buy kits which I have seen evidence of being copied from another vendor, and do the research to determine if the kit and its design are original and genuine. I think that's the most which a customer can do within reason. Unfortunately, aside from not buying from companies which copy kits, there is not much people can do in the international market. On this forum, if you have a kit that has evidence somewhere that it was copied from another vendor, you can speak freely about, ask advice on how to build it, and do it without the mindless hatred of those who have taken up the crusade to stop pirated kits with no regard whatsoever as to who they hurt along the way. Here they give you the benefit of the doubt.

No problem, Werner! I'm just trying to keep it friendly. I do like your build log. And on my Billings Boat 1:100 scale USS Constitution, the instructions were little more than hand-drawn pictures and were very simplistic. I made many additions, but most are still quite simplistic compared to what I am doing now.

Kurt, a very clear statement!
