Make your rope on a rope walk

Thanks Shota, but I don't sell. Especially I don't sell rope. It is a lot of work or time to make. The price would be to high making it on order like Ohla already told in her video. But I can always help when you want to start building a rope-walk and make your own rope. What is a nice episode to do in our hobby.
Thank you very much friend, I would love to help you when the time comes

For anyone looking for threads, I have one of the best websites I've yet to come across https://www.toko-kurzwaren.de/. They tend to take an age to get some of their goods sent, Gutermann E121 took almost 2 months. They have all the Mara and Tera sizes and colors, They also have the full range of Aman Serafill which I've really liked experimenting with. No Skala thread but hey you can get everything.
they sell a lot of different ropes.
I use only this one

Amann Serafil No.180 (120/2) 5.000m

the price of this is on this Dutch side a lot better, but they don't have such a big assortment like the German site.

Hi again Stephan,
I have never seen a chart showing mm thickness of the source threads. I have only seen mm thickness of the made-up ropes.
your absolutely right. Therefore I don't understand the question of Luigisoft.

You are right they are cheaper but the options are lacking. When making rope you need several sizes of thread, when you have more than 8-10 yarns per hook it starts to take a lot of time just walking back and forth. Having a lot of threads per strand does look realistic though.

Yes and no. Why no? On a ship scale 2/75 rope thicker than 1 mm 3x10 is rare. And when you have thicker you don't need much. So you can make shorter rope and work from your seat. I did. Making for example1,5 m. of 2 mm. rope with serafil you use 3 x 32 yarns to make. It looks real good when finished. I tried Gütermann and the result was with less yarns not that quality when use 32 threads serafil.
The shop have also Amann saba yarn and gutermann and other brands.

My question concerning the thickness of yarn was for those modellers not making their own rope, but using commercially made yarn for the rigging The number on the spool does not give the diameter. When rigging a period ship, it is important to use the correct diameter for the various types of rigging involved.

The diameter of yarn is almost never mentioned. Only the weight of yarn when it has a specific distance. I know for example that Serafil is 0,12 mm in diameter because the manufacturer mentioned it. The rest you need to measure yourself or use what is given by the manufacturer when your lucky.

There must be. But I don"t understand it. On Google you can search, I did but for me I only use serafill of Amann lockyarn. This is 120/2. The 2 stands for 2 threads the 120 for ......? But the thickness is 0,12 mm in diameter.
Great article, well researched. I have made my own ropewalk too, just a little bit different to yours. I too use Serafil. The 120 is an indicator of the thickness of thread, the larger the number, the thinner the thread. So, you can get 40/2 which would be easier to make thicker ropes. Love the info on heating the finished rope , I normally put a dab of CA glue before cutting but I like how heating helps with the twisting. Cheers

Excuse the question. What site in Australia do you purchase the Serafil?

Hi, sorry about the delay, I had to find the paperwork. Years ago I purchased Amann Serafil from Sewing Thread Specialists Group. They have a website, just do a Google search. Be aware , they have an Amann brochure, that you can download from the site but this supplier has a select amount of colours/sizes in their warehouse. Black (standing rigging) is easy and so is a beige colour (running rigging), it's getting the colours in various sizes that you need to check, especially if you want to go for a dark brown standing rigging. I use size 40 black for larger standing rigging, size 120 for smaller ropes like seizing/ratlines. With the beige colour , I use size 60 for running rigging, with size 120 for seizing etc. I do multiply threads to get thicker ropes. I also noticed that when I Googled, there is more available to Aus, than before. So try Google, Ebay. I have emailed the company I mentioned, to get an updated list of their Amann Serafil range. I'll let you know. Hope this helps. It's often frustrating getting things in Aus, quite often postage costs overseas make things a little expensive. I have so much satisfaction in making my own rope. I have modified my ropewalk many times. Enjoy, hope I have been helpful.

Just like to add, the German site (no English version), presented by FishnChips (thank you), does seem to have quite the choice of Amann, I had a quick look, with my limited German I believe postage costs are 30 euro to Aus. Cheers

I also believe the "2" is strands per thread. Confusing ? Yes. Some threads are 3 or 4? That's my take.

I can't find that colour on my quite extensive chart from Amann (240 colours), must be a very dark brown, just what I want.

Just another note, one of the things I found difficult with building my own ropewalk in Aus, was to find plastic/metal gears at a reasonable price, without being Chinese-less-than-quality , or paying an absolute bomb. Anyone point me somewhere? I have modified the "Domanoff", I purchased said product, didn't work for me producing multi-threads, so I modified it with new gears, as the originals disintegrated. Anywho, I'm very happy with my setup, I would like to know where can you buy gears etc. Cheers.
