Making Cannon

Hello,
several forumers have asked me if I would share the Royal Sun canon file for free.
There is a “slight” difference between a simple marine cannon without decorations and the Soleil Royal cannon.
A simple naval cannon requires about 1/2 hour of 3D drawing.
The decorations on the Soleil Royal cannon took me over 100 hours of 3d modeling.
I don't share 100 hours of work, I sell them...

When I started building my model, I thought I would make countermodels and then cast the guns from tin, apply copper and blacken. And maybe it would have been so, if the model was on a larger scale and there were 10-20 guns, but in 1:79 and more than 100 guns ... this is not a little. I was glad to find 3D technology for myself. Which became another hobby for me. I learned from scratch in Blender to model, print (a printer appeared at home) and prepare the product for further painting. The last photo is not the final version. I improved a lot, but for now I will make a spoiler here (this is not even in my thread) of what I have. I am all for making using the classical method and if I make something in a scale of 1:48, I will definitely do so, but for now I like 3D as well. So far I have recreated the gallery on my model, but there is still a lot ahead that I plan to print ...

Nice prints! Beautiful work!

for those who want to delve deeper into the topic of "cannons and carronades" I would recommend the book "The Arming and fitting of english ship of war 1600-1815" by Bryan Lavery
Chapters 16-17-18-19 describe the above topic very well , chapters 24 to 27 describe the carriages, the arrangement of the pieces on the sides, projectiles, powder, etc.. etc..

I have found Lavery's book to be excellent but limited when it comes to ordnance. Caruana covers 352 years and has more details on guns and carriages than all other sources that I have found combined. I cannot believe the cheap price but sometimes we get lucky. Caruana's two volumes are available at a very reasonable price at the site below. I would buy the set myself but already have volume II which covers the eras in which I have the most interest. Most of the cannon covered in Caruna's books are available in 2D and 3D drawings for free.

Smooth-Bore Muzzle-Loading 6pr 6ft
Drawing and dimensions as from "The Arming and Fitting of English Ship of War 1600-1815"
The 3D drawing is made in separate sections, to possibly change, without having to redo everything
my best wishes for the New Year

I fear most members cannot easily open DWG drawings. You might want to post as a PDF.

Thanks
Allan

Ciao Allan
Thanks for the suggestion : here are the PDF
I had thought of the DWG , so that everyone could make changes
I saw the George III cypher , that you sent me, .... but I'm not good enough to add it
The carriage for the 6pr 6ft, could be the one on page 98 of the Cutter Alert
Carlo
P.S. If you think it could be useful, I can draw the carriage , and then send both DWG 1:1 and PDF 1:12

Ciao Carlo,
Thanks for these. The carriages used for Blomefield guns are on post #22 above for a 24 pounder. If you would post the carriages for the 6 foot Blomefield 6 foot pounder that would be great.

Ok, it will be done!
A courtesy: do you have a scale drawing or dimensions for Dahlgren IX and XI guns
I have old drawings from "Treatise on ordnance and armor - 1865 Van Nostrand edit." which are not accurate

My collection of drawings ends with the Blomfield pattern as my interests have always been the 17th century to about 1815. But, I am sure there are members that would love to see Dahlgren and other naval ordnance so it is great to see more information posted. Thank you kindly for your contribution to this topic and thank you very much for your PMs and emails, it is fun to communicate with you on this subject.

Hi AllanKP69, you don't always find someone's willingness to share indeed I have stopped with certain people due to incombatibility of vanity.Frank

Hello Allan @AllanKP69 , I have just found your report, very interesting topic as I am currently in the stage of carriages and cannons. I should say that it is more about French guns. As I read at the beginning, you are looking for information specifically about French and Spanish guns. I can give you information here if you are interested. I recommend the book by Ancre "Artillerie de Mer".

Oh, then I found another picture where I assume that one of the two men is you.

Ciao Franco
I totally understand. Some folks are offering things at a price as it is a business for them so that makes sense, but for most it is a hobby and sharing for free is common. If you ever need this kind of information please do not hesitate to contact me here or via PM. I am happy to help if I can.

Hi Tobias
Yes the photo is Tiziano Mainardi on the right and me on the left. We met in Italy a year or so ago and had lunch together with his family. Tiziani is a ship modeler extraordinaire and a true gentleman! We had a great time discussing model ship building in general and more specifically his build of the Euryalus (36) 1803 which he has since completed.

I can only agree with you, he is a fantastic person and model maker, I had the opportunity to meet Tiziano and Ricci in Evian on October 2024. Euryalus is also on my list, luckily I have the books.

Really nice thread; enjoyed reading it. While it is unlikely that I'll ever be making my own shipboard artillery, it is nice to have all of the information 'just in case'.
