Model Shipways Massachusetts Privateer Rattlesnake

I monkied around with some decorations. 1st method used for starboard was okay, port side method was much better. I didn't trim the wood first. I cut the pattern but left the delicate parts connected to the wood until I was finished. My youngest recommended gold so I went with it. Definitely need to invest in small wood working tools for my next boat.20210311_095210.jpg20210311_101731.jpg20210311_112300.jpg20210311_125038.jpg20210311_134010.jpg20210311_135445.jpg20210311_140201.jpg20210311_145804.jpg20210311_145813.jpg

Thanks Paul, I appreciate that but let's see how she does with the cannons first (joking).
I am sure she will manage the cannons, but...I'd like to express my gratitude to her and thousands of others in uniform for their service! Also, for you as the fathers!

Hi Paul, good on you for trying, I’ve not tried myself, always thought that it looked too difficult.

Some work....but not too much. Picked up my daughter at 07:00 this morning. Should have been a quick 90 minute drive home but had a tire blow out at 70mph. I don't think I want her spending time building cannons on her limited time free. Much more important for her to pass on her knowledge to her brother and sister.20210313_220553.jpgreceived_791648095057872.jpegFB_IMG_1615704513718.jpg

I actually looked at the blueprints tonight. Found out that I had overlooked 4 sheaves and 2 chess trees. I should probably look at the blueprints more often...........

I'm going to start squaring up the oar ports and the inboard bulwarks next.20210317_215108.jpg20210317_215116.jpg20210317_215139.jpg

I ended up painting the window pains occre, I was too lazy to go get some blue paint so I talked myself into using the same color that was going to be used later on. I put aluminum foil to represent the windows.

Nice workaround with the paint work. There is an old saying in construction that a good painter can make a finish carpenter out of anyone. And with paint you can do that twice which you cannot redo if you cut it too short the first time. "I cut the board twice but it is still too short." Rich (PT-2)

Hi Paul, Looks like it’s coming together pretty quickly. You must be spending quite a bit of time on it, haven’t you got a lawn to mow.

I've settled for this configuration of the gunports. The amidship ports will be open for the cannons.

I drilled 4 scuppers on both sides as per blue prints.

I also finished up on the hatches leading to the officers quarters.

I need to do some more work on the inboard bulwarks.....they didn't come out right.

I did the Captain's windows tonight. First lesson learned.......I need much smaller tweezers. Building the window panes was a major PITA. My oldest made a comment on how outdated my technology is.....so I showed her how 'high speed, low drag' I am by getting a picture of my iPod connected to my hearing aids while calling the Captain's window....the Gunny window... all officers sleep below decks, the Marines have the officer quarters......20210322_215806.jpg20210322_221948.jpg20210322_222006.jpg20210322_222031.jpg

I had to do some modifications to the area that the rudder comes out of. Dead horse is in. Put a false deck for where the ladder leads down to the junior officers quarters. First attempt at making a ladder. I also finally glues the quarte deck in place.20210325_205836.jpg20210325_205852.jpg20210326_153731.jpg20210326_173426.jpg20210326_174348.jpg20210326_174621.jpg20210326_174626.jpg

Hi Paul,
Nice detailing. Quarter deck looks really sharp.
In looking at these recent pictures I'm wondering what you think of the size/scale of the capstan?
Paul,

I think the capstan scale is a little too big. I'm going to invest in some tools for the next boat. I'm positive that I could make these objects if I have better tools that a 25 year old dremil, exact knives, and small files. I started making the 6 kevels that are on the inboard bulwarks on the quarter deck.

I have already passed the level that I was when I built the first boat back in 2000. Big difference is I'm working on a desk......not the barracks deck...20210326_183141.jpg20210326_184444.jpg

Just did a side by side comparison with what the kit supplied...... I think the kit capstan is also a little too big....20210326_192519.jpg20210326_192512.jpg
