Model Shipways Massachusetts Privateer Rattlesnake

Working on Rattlesnake myself. Wish I saw this before I started, would have been very helpful. I hope you show the rest of the build. Good work.

It seemed like I was stuck in cannon rigging for a long time. Now I'm making the bitts for the main deck. I think they are better than the metal bitts that came with the kit. Ended up cutting one section off of the pumps...it was way too tall. I should be able to finish up the main deck this weekend and then go forward to the fore castle area.

It finally came to the point where the capstan and anchor cable didn't make sense. I've been wondering about that since I built the capstan a couple months ago. The blueprints on the kit don't provide an answer. I finally discovered the "messenger cable"..... now it makes sense. I took a guess where they would come out of the bulkhead, had to move the water pumps. Also discovered that there is no way to pull up both anchors at the same time, Im guessing the second anchor was a back up if they lost the first one.. The stars and planets are aligned again....capstan4.jpg20210529_091824.jpg20210529_091831.jpg

Today I attached the rudder and tiller. The copper pieces, pintle & gudgeon I had to make. I ordered a set a while ago...way too large. I ended up cutting them up and making new pieces. I also made the tiller out of two flat pieces of scrap wood. Didn't really have to but I want to give it a shot.20210531_123931.jpg20210531_132243.jpg20210531_142907.jpg20210531_142912.jpg20210531_144413.jpg20210531_152554.jpg20210531_205611.jpg20210531_205703.jpg20210531_192613.jpg20210531_195000.jpg20210531_195600.jpg20210531_205630.jpg

Update: a retired Marine officer made a comment about my tiller on Facebook.. some L/Cpl type comment about compensating... the more I looked at it the more it looked like it should be on the bathroom wall. So..... I redid my tiller.

I made the port fixed gangway tonight. It took a while to figure out how to make the iron knee supports listed in the directions. There was only one listed at the end of the gangway, to me, it seemed like two would be better. I tried cutting, sanding, wood, metal..... numerous different ideas that all failed. In my mind I was thinking the knee knockers on modern ships. I finally figured out how an iron support would be made, pre industrial revolution.... I broke out the curling iron and went to town. In inboard rail could use some more adjusting. I'm going to hold off until I get the starboard gangway done.20210601_220433.jpg20210601_220444.jpg20210602_135837.jpg20210602_174716.jpg20210602_174727.jpg20210602_195627.jpg20210602_195658.jpg20210602_195729.jpg

It looks like a bug on the website. I can't upload right now either. Donnie will fix it later. Could I request that after you use the ATTACH FILES button to include your pictures, click on the spot in your message where you want them to appear, the click on INSERT, then FULL SIZE. The pictures will appear larger on our screens, =and not be tiny icons. It makes it easier to view your splendid work.
