NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

I am starting to think I should use red on the frames…undecided yet
Just my opinion Dean, red grating frames would certainly tie the color theme into the railing, but you might be committing overkill. Again, I am the worst person to discuss color with and you are the expert.

Dean. Thanks. I’m now getting a tad more familiar how this works. I’ve looked your first 19 pages which is approx where I have got to before seeing your blog. Oh how helpful. I used on advice from modal shop white maple strips .5 x 3 mm planking with “ black cotton between I have completed main deck and lower deck about to start 2 upper decks I have sealed and sanded and Matt varnished but I much prefer your look can you advise stain colour as the kit says no 36. Mahogany which I have already painted the walls but not sure the decks would look any good Thanks for all your efforts I look forward to reading all of them. Ps. Is this the right place to ask advice ?
You can ask here. I used Varathane brand water based Golden Oak stain. But I also used a charcoal pencil to edge the boards, and this gets spread into the wood grain when sanding and effects the overall look and color. ;)

I have considered painting the frames, around all openings and the gratings, red. Also the boards at the edge of the decks. This would tie in the red bulwarks better... and the those boards all have railings on them, which will be red. Decisions...

I tried to darken the grating some more. Looks like I may have to keep adding stain…they are not taking the stain evenly.

Good evening Dean. The gratings are great and I prefer the darker stain.I also prefer the stern grating as the finish is symmetrical i.e. On the fore grating the port and starboard frames are on the edge strake itself while fore and aft are not. IMHO I wouldn’t paint the frames red, but not my ship. This being said they are excellent gratings. Cheers Grant

Thanks Grant! I will continue to stain them until I get even coverage. And I am leaning towards no paint on them.
On the fore grating, the width needed made the sides end up with an edge board. Nothing I could do other than make it narrower, but I chose to keep the exact opening size. The other one ended up being the correct width without boards on the side. It’s a minor detail, but perhaps it’s not correct? Maybe I should have made that grating with less width? Too late now as everything is glued in place.
By the time all the deck furnishings are in place, I doubt it will be obvious there is a difference from one to another. The details tend to get lost in the clutter. I always agonize over the details and soon enough I realize that they will most likely never be noticed. A completed ship is way too busy for people to focus on any one thing for long. But we know! ;)

As long as you continue to feed us close-ups, though, we will continue to carp, criticize, and opine while you go on ahead and do what you're gonna do.;)
So true Vic! ROTF
I do listen to opinions, but obviously I make the final decision. A lot of times I know what I want in my mind, but it sometimes takes experimentation to end up with what I had envisioned. Like falling down the stairs and landing on your feet. ;)

Translation difficulties. That's exactly what I wanted to say. Along the edges of the gratings, the bars should just be like on one of them

Thats the same problem I had on my Vasa. I had to force an edge board on some of them to maintain continuity. Your gratings look fantastic just the way they are now. So, at the risk of being irritating, can you make the grate frames the same tone as the deck edge board adjacent to it?:p If not it all still looks really fine.

Well that’s my struggle, staining pear wood and having consistency! I stain and then sand with steel wool to light it and give it an aged look. Then I clear coat, which darkens it some again. The good news is consistency is not realistic. ROTF.
But I am not done. I go back and forth between stain, sanding and clear coat. It gets frustrating, but I am persistent until I get what I am after. ;)

So many of the kits have such thick frames for the grates. It’s like they’d be a foot tall and people could sit on them. I like the size to scale of these.
