To me the grating frame would look best if it matched the upper deck pearwood shade. Were you going to stain the grating itself?
Mix some stains - use a color chart to get close....try on SCRAP FIRST!Wood they match in real life? *would
Thanks, I tend to obsess over small details.I think the grate looks great as it is, but agree it would even look greater if the wood matched. Never worry about being too picky.
I love it! It’s a great grate!I think the grate looks great as it is, but agree it would even look greater if the wood matched. Never worry about being too picky.
Hi Dean. I would opt for the stain because I enjoy the contrasting tones the frame has with the grating itself. Just a personal tasteI may have to add a little stain…or am I being too picky?
Go ahead and stain it. I have yet to see a white grating on a real ship. Someone dig open internet ship picture archives and prove me wrong. I can take it.Ok I built a grating, as a warm up…lol. Not sure if I like the wood tones yet. Maybe after the others are in I can make a better call. The border is pear wood and it seems to always have different tones, which can be frustrating when trying to create a theme. I wanted it to match the pear wood at the perimeter of the decks. I may have to add a little stain…or am I being too picky?

Dean, write comments on the gratings, or is it not worth it anymore?I wanted the grating lighter than the frame, and the frame darker. So I stained both and coated with matte clear. I like this better.
I also made another one…

It has an aged look, which goes with the deck.
Hi Alexander, I am confused… perhaps it is the translation? You said write comments on the gratings? Why would I write comments on my gratings? I am discussing the color choices, if that is what you mean?Dean, write comments on the gratings, or is it not worth it anymore?
Thank you, I am glad this log is of use to you.Dean. I’m so glad I found this build log. As someone above says it’s like a tutorial. A very good one with the openness of your views and feelings shared helps a novice like me to understand more about what modelling really is thank you. My own attemp so far is just about the same progress as this page 14. I’m now going back into improve and pit my learning to good effect. Thanks
Hey Kurt, I agree… I have only seen it lighter on ship models.Go ahead and stain it. I have yet to see a white grating on a real ship. Someone dig open internet ship picture archives and prove me wrong. I can take it.
Dan, your Norske Löwe looks impacable!!! Veru nice and clean and beatifull work!I tried to darken the grating some more. Looks like I may have to keep adding stain…they are not taking the stain evenly.

I am starting to think I should use red on the frames…undecided yet
Dean, I meant the shape of the bars, not their color.Hi Alexander, I am confused… perhaps it is the translation? You said write comments on the gratings? Why would I write comments on my gratings? I am discussing the color choices, if that is what you mean?
I have the same issue, I like the darkened stain effect of the gratings Dean.I wanted the grating lighter than the frame, and the frame darker. So I stained both and coated with matte clear. I like this better.
I also made another one…
