Well Grant, usually I just watch the Dutch team's matches in the background while doing other things. I like it when they win, but I'm not really a die-hard supporter. The next match is at 03:00 Dutch time. I'll have something better to do then

I found a workaround. I left those gunports that have the bulkheads behind them open.
I also left open the ones where the hull has too much curvature, and glued them last.
I have also placed the baseboards against the walls.

Your deck planking looks neatly done! At this small scale it is great that you are not using spikes or treenails.
I cannot find any information on this so a question maybe you can answer. Were the decks of Spanish ships flat unlike British ships which had various degrees of rounding depending on the deck and ship size, or is this a kit design mistake?

Hi Allan,
This is indeed a design flaw in the kit, or rather a deliberate simplification by OcCre.
In historical shipbuilding, the decks of Spanish ships of the line, just like British and French ships, absolutely had a distinct camber (transverse curvature from side to side) and a sheer.
In the 18th century (the Santísima Trinidad was built in Havana in 1769), Spanish shipbuilders—including the renowned designer Jorge Juan—followed highly advanced scientific principles. Deck curvature was essential for all large warships of that era for three crucial reasons:
- Water drainage (Camber): Without the crown of the deck sloping towards the sides, (sea)water would pool on the decks. This would cause the wood to rot quickly and make the ship top-heavy. The water needed to run off to the sides and exit through the scuppers.
- Structural strength: A slightly curved deck beam acts like an arch. It can support and distribute the immense weight of heavy bronze or iron cannons down into the hull much better than a perfectly straight, flat beam.
- Longitudinal strength (Sheer): The sheer ensured that the bow and stern were higher, making the ship much more seaworthy in heavy seas.

I watched it yesterday and am disappointed and indeed you can be very proud!
I managed to spend a few more evenings working on the other side of the ship.
The sharp curves of the bow in particular weren't easy.
One bulwark threatened to snap because I tried to bend it while it was too dry. I was able to fix it with CA glue (another lesson learned).
Using a brush and a bit of water, the bending wasn't too bad after all.
With a bit of luck, bending and fitting the planks will be a bit easier going forward, but we'll see about that.
After sanding, the transitions of the bulwarks are smooth, and I hope the planking process will go smoothly now.
The stern plate was provisionally mounted. Next up is to align it correctly.
After that, I can start planking the bulwarks around the gunports.

These first rows aren't too bad. Even without sanding, it already looks pretty neat (if I do say so myself).

Hallo Peter, wie ich sehe, arbeitest du voran. Für den Anfang sieht es schon gut aus. Du hast dir wirklich eine Hercules-Aufgabe gesucht und an den auf dich zukommenden Herausforderungen wirst du wachsen. Wichtig finde ich für mich, sich Zeit zu geben.
Weiterhin alles Gute für dich und viel Freude beim Fertigen eines prächtigen Segelschiffes.

Hallo Holger,
vielen Dank für deine aufmunternden Worte und deinen Rat bezüglich des dickflüssigen Sekundenklebers. Leider habe ich noch einen Vorrat von 25 Fläschchen à 20 Gramm, die ich erst einmal aufbrauchen möchte. Die Planken, die ich damit verklebe, werden später lackiert, daher gehe ich davon aus, dass die Flecken, die mein Sekundenkleber hinterlässt, unsichtbar werden.
Ich weiß deine Tipps wirklich sehr zu schätzen und hoffe, dass du mir auch weiterhin mit Rat und Tat zur seite stehst.

thank you for your encouraging words and your advice regarding the thick CA glue. Unfortunately, I have a stock of 25 20-gram bottles that I really want to use up first. The planks I am gluing with it will be painted, so I expect the stains caused by my CA glue to disappear.
I highly appreciate your input and hope you will keep sharing your advice.

By now, I’ve attached 14 planks and cut out 60 gun ports, with 76 more to go. Looks like I’ll be getting calluses on my fingers in my old age after all……
I still need to wet these areas again and bend them into the right shape, but first, I’ll add a few more planks.

Planking is starting to feel like a routine. Bending is pretty easy using a glass of water, a small file, and a travel iron.
Cutting out the gun ports with the scalpel is also going smoother and smoother.
I want to give the wall at the bow the same appearance as the previously made walls between the upper gun deck and the main deck.
But first, back to the planking.
