Ships display stand??

Jan
The first thing that comes to my mind - is the part of the model pedestals?!
Coolest smokestacks ever...

G'day guys, some good idea's there, like the one about the smoke stack, and in a way it is a stand of sorts, see below,

112.jpg

113.jpg
I wanted the base part to mount the Bofor guns onto,

114.jpg
just sitting in place not glued yet,

115.jpg
and a close up view,

thanks for looking in,

best regards John,

G'day Paul, on another model you would have been correct, the Borcum Steam launch,

172.jpg
On the Borcum I wanted a flare topped funnel so Ibought a couple of these brass vases,

173.jpg
I just wanted the flare top which I cut off in the lathe,

174.jpg
cleaning up the top,

175.jpg
and the piece of tube it would be fitted to,

176.jpg
soldered in place,

298.jpg
and mounted on the boiler, so you were pretty close, you will have to come shopping with me,

best regards John.

116.jpg
I turned up three plugs for the exhausts and glued them in place,

117.jpg
just checking for fit,

118.jpg
I gave them an undercoat of matt blue, and I am also test fitting the exhaust lids,

119.jpg
another view looking down on the transom, the exhaust lids will be taken off and painted before finally being fitted in place,

best regards John,

.

The piece of copper tube I had ordered for the cooling stack arrived,

121.jpg
I ordered a long length in case of any mistakes,

122.jpg
There was no way i could bend it so I cut a notch half way through and then bent it to match the plan,

123.jpg
The first bend,

124.jpg
and the second bend near the top,

125.jpg
after making the other half and soldering them together with a bridging piece,

126.jpg
and the air intake that goes on the top,

127.jpg
another view, there is still a bit of filling and sanding to do,

thank you for looking in,

best regards John.

Good afternoon John. Excellent work and ingenuity. Cheers Grant

1138.jpg
I cut aand lined a hatch for the forward Bofor to sit on, so that I could add ballast to the fore end if needed,

1139.jpg
fitting the ammo lockers on the raised hatch, I marked where they were to go and then drilled a couple of holes through so that i could insert dowells from underneath for strength,

1140.jpg
just a bit of a mock up to see what she will look like, nothing glued yet,

thanks for looking in,

best regards John,

Before I could do anything else on the deck I had to turn her over and fit the shafts rudders etc,

141.jpg
the running gear, shafts tubes props rudders an supports for the tubes,

142.jpg
close up of the props, they are 55mm dia right and left handed,

143.jpg
marking out the bottom for where the tubes exit the hull, where they will stop, also where the props stop and finally where the rudders go,

144.jpg
cutting and filling the exit holes for the tubes,

145.jpg

test fitting the tubes and props for fit,

best regards John,

after I was happy with the tube prop positions I bent the ends of the support brackets added them to the tube prop assembly and marked there place, then I drilled four holes through the hull and added screws to hold them temporarily in place,

147.jpg
another view,

149.jpg
I then dismantled everything, and CA super glued the support brackets in place over the holes,

150.jpg
I also marked and drilled the holes for when I assemble the rudders,

151.jpg
another view,

152.jpg
I then epoxied a thick piece of plywood inside the hull over where the support bracket screws would come through ans when it had dried I screwed the support brackets in place, you can see where the tubes will come in through the hull.

best regards john,

The tubes coming inboard, I lined them up and epoxied them both to some pieces of wood laid across the hull,

154.jpg
when the epoxy had dried I then Fibre glassed over where they came through the hull,

best regards john,

155.jpg
I had two rudders but they were too small, so I decided to enlarge them,

156.jpg
I have plenty of pieces of brass and copper in my junk box, but didn't have any that would do the job on their own, so I had to use several pieces for each rudder, shows two pieces cut to fit, I cleaned these up and soldered them to one side of the rudder,

157.jpg
then on the other side I soldered three pieces,

158.jpg
Then trimmed them to the size I wanted, just have to be cleaned up,

159.jpg
after cleaning up with a miniature sanding disc, a couple of areas to be filled in,

160.jpg
and after filling and a final sanding,

161.jpg
and the other sides,

thanks for looking in,

best regards john,
