Great cutting mat debate:

As a new member to this forum, I enjoy browsing through old posts and this morning I happened upon the Cutting Mat Debate. This involved the acceptable color for cutting mats ( Green) but totally ignored the big question: What is the purpose of these things?

I have been building ship models for far longer than I care to remember. All of my models are scratch built so I do not cut parts from sheet stock. I have a dedicated workbench with an MDF top. When the top gets fouled with paint, glue, etc. light sanding and a new coat of grey paint restores it to first class condition.

Perhaps to become a respected member of this community I should invest in a (green) cutting mat! Before I do so is there some other reason for owning one?

Roger

Not to sound rude but 10.00 dollars for a cutting mat is not something I would call " investing". Hobby lobby, Amazon , Michael's all have mats in multiple colors and sizes. Aside from providing a non slip work surface most glues don't stick too well and can easily be cleaned off.

A cutting mat will improve your work, nothing more nothing less. Alien

The primary purpose of the mat is to be green and on your workbench. The secondary purpose to let everyone know what a savvy and skillful craftsman you are. ROTF

... Before I do so is there some other reason for owning one?
Hallo Roger,
the main reason is the fact, that the knife is not getting dull so fast - and you protect the working table
and as you know already - she had to be green - on the backside often black, but one side should be green......

I got tired of trying to untangle lines when rigging the ship. I bought these spools and clips. When I open a new line package I unwind it on the floor. I hold the line between my spread fingers to keep the loops from getting twisted. I then wind it back up on these spools.

This is what I bought, but looks like no longer available. Amazon probably has something similar.
