Shackleton's Endurance - Occre - By Bill-R

Looking good, Bill.
I'm suffering boat building withdrawal symptoms while away from home. Currently in the UK. Hope to make it back to Spain next Tuesday /Wednesday.
2400 km on the clock so far.

Hello Barcomad,

I know what you mean. I just got home from a week of hiking up in the mountains. Couldn't wait to get back to building.

I had to stop half way through rat lining. An unexpected visitor then we were heading off early to maximise daylight driving. We try to make the centre of Holland in 2 days. That's 850km each day. Enough for me at the age of 75. Mountain hiking days are long behind me. Then to be honest, it was only hills in the UK.

Hello everyone,

I've gotten the bulkheads in place with no problem and have started on the planking. The planking supplied with the model is too wide for the scale. I have cut 2.5mm planks to use for my model. At 1:70 scale, that would make a plank around 7" wide. While I am planking, I have started to work on the opening under the forward deck. The pictures that I have seen do not show any doors for the opening. I have not been able to find any pictures that show the entire opening, but for now I will use what information I have found. There have been several other pictures of ships that I have seen that do not have doors for this opening. Not use if there is a standard for this.

By the way. If you notice me using the wrong terminology for ship parts or structures, please let me know. I am new to ship building, so any help would be greatly appreciated. When I was young I raced sail boats, but that was a long time ago and a lot of water has gone under that bridge.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, I took the easier way and used the planks directly from the kit. I have to admit that yours looks much better!

Thanks. To be honest, the way they did them in the kit looked much harder to me. I wouldn't say that mine are better. Just different. I've made some progress lately. I need to post some pictures.

Hello everyone,

I’ve made some progress on my Endurance. I have the bulwarks and stanchions in place. I also have the top rails in place. I tried staining the deck, but it turned out way too red for what I wanted. I have started to remove the stain. I have gotten some more completed, but I’m not sure what they are called. I need to find a source that shows what the parts of a ship are called.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas.

Bill

Looking great! This is a fun build. I am just about to finish up the deck, and soon onwards to the bowsprit and masts!

I am currently building the Endurance which is ship number 3 for me. My first build was about 40 years ago but I do not recall the ship's name. But at 62 I felt the need to start a new hobby to relax and enjoy life, and the ship I chose was the Albatross which I thoroughly enjoyed. This led to my current build, the Endurance, and I have an unopened Occre Beagle which I received as a Christmas gift from my wife. I have taken pictures of the build and am getting over my shyness about posting the progress pictures.

That’s great. Posting pictures on this site is very easy. Everyone here is very supportive, so don’t worry about being shy.

Hello Grant,

Happy New Year to you also. I agree. The stain removal will take a little effort, but I think I can get it removed to my satisfaction. At the moment, the planking is taking some time. This is the first build I have done with double planking and the thickness of the first planks are giving me a little bit of a challenge. It's just taking a little longer than I had planned. No big deal.

Thanks for the look in and encouragement.

Bill

I got all of the stain off. It wasn’t hard. I used the edge of a razor knife blade. I ran it across the planks like a card scraper. Now I just need to figure out what to use for stain. I would like the deck to have a weathered look.

Good morning Bill. Its looking marvellous. I have often thought how to do a weathered appearance on my decks and have “chickened” out. It would look awesome if you get that right tho. Cheers Grant
