Mike likes brass, but the dyed toothpicks are easy to work with. Bolts would have been used on interior structures, not exposed to water such as the frames. Treenails were used on weather exposed surfaces like decks, hull planking etc. They were made of wood, and on decks at least they were actually plugs that fit in the hole covering a metal bolt/screw that was the actual fastener.

Looking good Shane! Like Dave said the frames get easier as you go, you’ll have them all done sooner than you think.

Shane, I've used toothpicks like Dave and it turned out great, you can see how I colored them in my log.

Sorry Zoly for not responding sooner, I found out my jig was or is out of square, so I will fix that and the 1/48 frame pieces are so small, I am having trouble cutting sandable pieces. I have not given up, just working on other projects.
