Mike likes brass, but the dyed toothpicks are easy to work with. Bolts would have been used on interior structures, not exposed to water such as the frames. Treenails were used on weather exposed surfaces like decks, hull planking etc. They were made of wood, and on decks at least they were actually plugs that fit in the hole covering a metal bolt/screw that was the actual fastener.
