Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Continuing work in same areas, but now added two staircases as well as anchor knighthead details. Images will do all the talking. Thanks for your visits, and comments….I know that the forward bulkhead probably did not have a banister and stairs - but probably just stairs from the door down.
Regards,

This is stinking awesome work! I’m speechless, and that doesn’t happen often.

Exquisitely executed staircases. This is the kind of detail that adds so much to a build - simply invaluable! Thumbs-Up

Paul: Thank you – you are always so generous with your posts

Vfordyce: Wow - thanks SO much - very encouraging indeed.

Daniel20: Re: the landing it, for this ship per historical drawings, should be just stairs. That understood, I decided to add the gilded bit that works well with the other pieces at this bulkhead. Also, it appears as if my gundeck door opening is a bit high from – looking at other museum and drawing examples.

Kurt: As always thanks – especially from you given that you are, rightfully so, immersed in trying to get this ship “just right” historically. But as has been noted for a long-time empirical information is so full of gaps. I have personally decided -well with a kit base of course – not to lose sleep about this one. I lost enough trying to get the Corel Vasa to look better lol…Having loads of fun adding details as I think of them - right or wrong lol

Heinrich: Thanks - indeed adding details are, for me, still a learning experience - well justified timewise in order to improve skills and as you wrote adding much to a build. Thanks for your kind posts....

Mates: thanks so much for the “just dropping by” looks – also very much appreciate as well as the likes.

Regards,

What comes first is that you enjoy your build your way. Whatever floats your boat, Oldflyer! (pun intended) :D

I have a question for SotS deep research members; Kurt, Janos, Nigel, et al. I have come across this “vent?” on two builds one from Ed Marple, and one from an unknown Japanese commercial builder. It was made for a client in 2009. I can’t find any info about this anywhere regarding the Sovereign. Could it be a cooking area vent?? Odd place – I would think.

I’m tempted to emulate this detail. Any advice or help will be appreciated.

It looks very much like a smoke stack for the galley underneath. I am just not sure whether it is authentic. At the time of Sovereign as far as I know no such thing existed yet, they simply let the smoke exit through the gratings.

Hi – have not at all visited S of Scale for what seems like a couple of months – yikes!!!
Been busy with a new work opportunity that required a lot of seat time, new learning, re-certifications and a test Grrrr. But during my free “mental time” I only worked on the SotS –, doing almost nothing else - good therapy (;-))
During that time finished up the forecastle. Here are some images (probably too many). As always thanks for dropping by, likes, and comments. Next up the side support railings for the bowsprit deck…..
OK - Now back to a more normal routine -- need to catch up and click likes at the great build logs that I am following here. Lot’s of catching up to do.

Regards,

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! What did you use for the gold on the belfry? Oh, and I'm STEALING your ladder railing ideas... ;) Thumbsup

The ladder looks like the Amati ones. I bought eight of these which will be detailed with scratch made ladders. The railings oldflyer designed look like the best way to make the railing. I may try using Falkonet 9mm belaying pins for the balusters instead of the turned wood columns. It's the only way to get the details small enough in a practical way, although the belaying pins are quite expensive to use in such a way. See the link below.

Angled Step Ladder, 12mm wide, AM4320/12. Purchased at Ages of Sail. Currently priced at $1.87 each. If you are clever, you can make these and a custom size from scratch using a hand saw and a miter box, but if these fit your ship scale, they are more than worth the cost.

This super detailing of such small items totally blows my mind with the precision that you provide!!! Rich (PT-2)

Looks fantastic! It’s going to be a beautiful ship. ;)

John you have one of those ships that I can spend a lot of time just looking over and imagining what it must have been like to sail on the real ship.
Thank you!

Paul, Dean, Vfordyce, PT2, Daniel20, thanks so much for your very kind posts – so appreciated…

Inge: thanks as well. I got this kit from Cornwall Model Boats in the UK. At that time the exchange rates were very much in my favor. Age of Sail in CA also inventories these kits.

Kurt: as always thanks as well – need to check out the work you have done on yours. Stairs yes please “steal” I have been a clepto as well lol. Bell housing see below. Stairs were from Cornwall UK in generic packaging - not sure original source.

Uwe: You are always kind with posts as well. Thanks.
Re: work – yes it has been very positive, thanks for asking. The FAA FAR’s Part 121 – under which I worked required me to retire. But FAR’s Part 123 were an employment option. A very long-time, and close friend at the FAA called me, with outside sources looking for part-time temporary fill in positions . He also brought my certificates to current status – hence the tests, and the required in-machines seat-time.
So far so good. Now occasionally driving small machines (turbine as well as prop), as a copilot for the 1% hahaha… and only short hauls – all good. May not last long but that’s ok as well. Being “on-call” with occasional short windows, and little $ is ok. For now – enjoy driving again.
