Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Thanks Daniel :) - new gratings were indeed much needed.
Looking forward to the vacation - Birthday party - of course -- too many jokes such as "well we all know that now when you
get inside an aircraft and push a button - it's just to order another drink" - indeed haha lol

Hi,
I have been totally away from this hobby for more than two months and, it was now time to fix this big mess at the stern portion of this project – a continuation from post #316. Given that I did not follow Sergal’s instructions primarily due to the non-rounded tuck….(well for almost all of this project as well)

Here are some images of my continued work at the stern area.
PS: apologies so many images in one posting
Cheers

Good morning John. Great to see you back. Wow, that is incredible work. Wonderful modelling. PS I think I can see the handrails through the window in one pic ;) . Cheers Grant

she's a beast!

Hi,
Thanks so much for all of your very kind – welcome back and encouraging posts. Still much to be done…Posting these images of my errors in thinking (of many haha)– possibly helpful to a few other builders – as I continue to fix and finish planking the aft stern. As I have noted previously this example has very little to do with any historical accuracy – such as might be available with today’s research.

(Kurt – being an exception with his current Sovereign bashing – he has absorbed himself with any and all historical data that are available in order to build a much more historically accurate early example of this ship’s decades in service [the ship was launched on 13 October 1637 and served from 1638 until 1697, when a fire burned the ship to the waterline at Chatham.]) ------ Notations within images limit needed text….

This commercial German site has many really amazing models that are or had been for sale. Images can each be clicked three times allowing for super detailed looks at each builder’s work.

Regards,

Hello,

Here are some updated images of the continuing work with the stern gallery outer faces. I like how the outer windows turned out. Certainly more historically accurate (haha – this kit has nothing to do with historical accuracy)..

though I am (I think) a bit regretful, in that all of the previous work (interior floorings, gold trimming on upper and lower inner window frames, and gallery planking are now totally hidden from view by adding the outer skin windows and their small frames -- oh well. Still along with all of the solid bronze bits, this kit is an impressive offer from Sergal (Mantua).

The last image below highlights the difference in quality from the solid bronze bits (vintage kit) with current blended white metal electroplated current issues' product. – now need to work on the open areas under the stern as well as scratch building the rudder. As always thanks so much for dropping by, likes and comments.

Regards,

Good morning John. Insane model. Beautiful pulled off though. Cheers Grant

Looking VERY nice John:cool:

Given all the work in the main cabin, some subtle LED lighting would be a good way to bring the interior back into view.I know you are a long way along but one easy solution to avoid lots of rework ( I am at it again:rolleyes: ) would be the lighting kit from Artesania Latina. It only powers a few LEDs in flickering mode but you can run it off watch batteries so the power supply could be installed under a removable hatch on say you Poop deck

Kind Regards

Nigel

Paul, Grant, Greg, Jack, Daniel, Kurt - thanks so much for your very kind posts

Nigel,

Yes indeed
– the idea of lights hit me in the face just after I installed the back side of the outer windows. I did not think that they (all the windows) would SO “blacken out” all interior details. I have been “obsessing” with this for a week or so. I am so tempted to in-fact remove the last upper cover plate to regain access to the two floors as well as the inner gallery decks.

I did see the youtube video of the Soleil along with lighting, and their lighting kit. It won’t work for this application in that it requires AA or AAA batteries.

The solution will be for me to again purchase LED’s from Evan Designs ( a sponsor here as SoS) as I did for my Santisima cross section. His lights require a small flat battery as well as incorporating a small on/off switch. Santisima below (entire build log is here at SoS). He also has a blinking option also available..

TBD – I will order lights and add needed inner seals. I don’t think that for this build I will construct lantern housings –but, I do want to also light the inner balconies as well as the upper and lower officer quarters. Fun,fun, fun,…. That said the elephant left in the room are the five lanterns YIKES hahaha…

Cheers,
