Sussex 1693 navy board model

Great to see your progress on the Sussex

btw:
today at the 11th April 1693 – Launch of HMS Sussex, an 80-gun third-rate ship of the line of the English Royal Navy, lost in a severe storm on 1 March 1694 off Gibraltar.

Thank you for the info, very interesting

Bird when you glued the futtocks together did you check against the profile to make sure things aren't running off? I know this is awkward with all the "green " around the outside, but Looking how McArdle has drawn the futtocks, they have a "kick" in each joint.I just don't want you to have a frame too wide or too narrow across the tops beyond your sanding allowance. I understand your lines give you the correct overlap, it is the overall profile I am thinking of.

Kind Regards

Nigel
Hello everyone, I've decided to take the time and complete the full frame to use as a glueing jig , I really didn't want to I already did this once for the patterns, my printer doesn't mirror image so I have to transfer with lacquer thinner , but I found if I was only a little bit out of alignment it through the top demetion off , so this seems to work the best..

would it be better, that you cut the front edges or faces to the correct length of the futtocks and other timbers?
Later on, after glueing the elements together, it will be much harder to get them shortened
I am usually using for such works the disc-sander to get the correct length

Yes it probably would be easier in the long run , the book tells me to file these in after the hull is complete, they are only over by 1/8 of inch should be pretty easy to file afterwards, thanks

Hello everyone it's been a while since my last update on the Sussex, I finally finished the frames for the hull for the most part, the weather is getting better so I've been spending time outside, I now have to make a jig to glue these all together , I will keep you posted along the way

Hello everyone I'm just about done with the Bruckshaw jig, I made a couple of improvements over the picture in the book, still some small things to do, but everything is level and square, I used sintra for the 2 white 1/4 inch stripes (plastic) so glue would not stick to them , I also made sure the bottom is perfectly flat ( no dips ) I think I'm ready to start gluing them together now , I will keep you posted along the way..

Hello everyone I finished the hull jig, it had some problems that had to be addressed, but this should do it , I added some gussets to make sure they stay at 90 degrees, I also notched them to slide on the sintra so they will stay centered, put straight edge on bottom side to keep perfectly flat ( my bench sucks) I also snapped a line down the middle to be absolutely sure, it may be an overkill but I'm like that , I apologize for the long post .. thanks

Hello everyone, I started gluing the first frames today, I glue 6 or 7 frames together with first jig to make a section, then in the second jig , it seems to be working well so far , still a long way to go..

Hello everyone it's been a while since my last update on the Sussex navy board model, the weather has been good so I've been enjoying it, I haven't got a lot done, I finished the midship frames & did a little sanding, I cut & mortised the fore & aft deadwood on the bandsaw since I don't have a mill yet, but they came out very nice & clean & straight, I am now in the process of cutting the proper angle on the fore &aft frames to fit into the mortise, this probably should have been done before hand but I wasn't sure, so this simple angle jig works great with Japanese saw , I will keep you posted along the way.. thanks
