The Donald David, a Maine Lobster Boat, launched 1956

Well, things are finally coming together. Our new hone in Wisconsin was finished about 4 months ago and my workshop is nearly done rebuilding in the basement of our new home. There is still some groundwork for the yard but I will soon resume construction on the Donald David.
Good to see you've settled in.

Hello, Jan.
Thanks for the kind response. There is still some outdoor work to be done, but the dust is settling.
I hope your having the same weather as us. t's 80 degrees, full sun, no clouds. I'm out in shorts and T-shirt planting bulbs.

(BTW, I'm trying to decide if I want to try a 1/12 scale Chris-Craft or OcCre's Ulisis Tug. R is interested in my Christmas wishlist)

Your temp is about 5 degrees warmer than ours today. I have been cleaning a lot trash (fence wire mostly) in the our woods behind the house. I'm guessing that the trash has been thrown there over the past 50+ years of farm life in the area.
Chris Craft or Tug is a win/win situation in my opinion, both are highly tempting. Full speed ahead and don't worry about what Mr. Farragut said about the torpedoes!

Temperature here in Wisconsin was 3 F yesterday evening, 23 F at this moment. Colder than it is in NC, but warmer than the times we had -40 F when we lived in Wisconsin 30+ years ago. And it is very nice to have two sections of family within two blocks of our new home in Neenah, WI. That reminds me, I must get my data updated on this site.

After an extremely long delay, I am finally back to work on The Donald David, 16TH scale model of a real Maine lobster boat. My workshop in our new house in Wisconsin is finally usable; it is larger than my shop in North Carolina. The hull was mostly framed before we packed the boat for our big move to WI. Currently I an assembling strips of planks to form the deck walkway from stem-to-stern on each side. Attached are photos of the strips that will be full length of the hull. A short length of the 6-strip planks is seen in a photo of them clamped to one side of the hull. Another photo is of small wooden blocks that I am going to glue to the 10 beams each side so that the planks (they form the walkway on each side of the hull) will be securely held in place. It will be a slow process

Attached photo shows ten small blocks of wood glued to the port side, interior of the hull. These blocks are supports for the deck walkway from stem to stern. Next will be same type of blocks attached to starboard.

Hi SAHashkell, could you tell me the name of the other boats in this one that you are modeling? Thank you, Frank

Hello, Frank48. I am not sure what other boats you are referring to. The Donald David is my only build log, but there may be other boat images or references. I do have 3 different toy boat styles that I have built MANY of in the past 40 years, more or less. Those are about 6 to 8 inches long and are made of solid wood, cut to shape and glued. I can assemble some photos if you like.
Best regards.
Steven

Hi SAHashkell, Thank you for responding, I took the liberty of asking for the names to compare them with plans I have “Maine Lobster Boat Tranquil C”. Frank

Hi, Frank48.
I believe many of the names on boat kits are probably made-up names. The Donald David lobster boat that I am modeling has long since been out of service. The owner/operator is no longer alive, His name is William West but everyone called him Bill or Billy. The last boat that he built was named Donald David, after his son that was born while the boat was being built.
I have many photos of various Maine lobster boats. I can look through those photos to get a list of a lot of the boat names if you like.
Happy modeling.
Steven
