The Mary Rose

Gunports are now finished -

On to the anchor. There is no archaeological evidence for a cathead because the part of the hull where it would have been fitted has eroded away and the cathead itself has not been found.

However, documentation exists from charges incurred 14 March to 16 July 1513 for the Mary Rose which detail -

a. ... that 2s 6p (i.e two shillings and six pence) was paid in Plymouth for making 'a cat' (the timber), and
b. ... in Sandwich, 5s 4p was paid to John Messyng for 'a hook to fetch the anchor with....'

So, there was a cathead timber and some tackle. Here's my humble interpretation -

The timbers -

Timbers painted (pin into hull to be cut to length), hook tackle tied (to be trimmed) -

The anchors are rigged -

20250218_151735.jpg

All rigging is now tied off to the external hull now that I don't need to get to the decks -

Having finished off the rigging is a good reason to crack a cold one. I have taken her off the kit stand and have an idea to fettle that down a bit prior to painting it.

Thanks Grant, much appreciated.

The Anthony Roll shows features on the ends of the main and fore lower spars. These are sheaves, the idea being to snag in enemy rigging and enable boarding -

AnthonyRoll-2_Mary_Rose.jpg

Experimenting with several curved chisels. As you can see, results vary slightly, but I only need two pairs which match so will persevere until I get there -

Hi Graham
Absolutely outstanding quality of build and eye for detail . Hope to reach your levels of skill some day
Steve

Thank you Steve, that is most kind.

The sheaves are now mounted on pins secured with a dab of CA. I used laminated paper as it was better to push the pin into than card. Painted -

and mounted -

That's effectively the ship build itself finished, final job will be a dust down and any touchups before going into the case.
Time to crack on with the base board.

Congratulations on a lovely ship and a fascinating build log. I have enjoyed it.

Thank you Stevinne, much appreciated.

All of the necessary parts are now made for the case - base sides, feet and case corner edges. This is ripped from an oak table we used to have but I saved for the timber. A couple of coats of French Polish -

The base is finished. I incorporated four people from facial reconstruction of their remains (archer, cook, gunner and carpenter), their possible occupation being based on where their remains were found in the wreck during excavation. Also Sir George Carew who went down with the ship -

Not forgetting the key team who researched, recovered and conserved the wreck -

That's as far as I can go until the acrylic arrives, so a quick carving -

Thank you Grant, also following your own build with great interest.

The acrylic(5mm) has arrived, so time to build the case. Check, check and check again making sure that edges are aligned and that all is square.....

I got special permission to use the boss's sewing table as a large flat build surface and was deeply honoured - I still remenber the bollocking I got for using the sewing scissors.

All glued and time to add the edge beadings -

Congratulations on finishing your build! That’s a huge milestone and a testament to your skill and perseverance. The final result looks fantastic, truly a model to be proud of. Well done, shipmate!
