USS Constitution - Model Shipways

Thanks for posting. Many great ideas. Just starting masting on HM Badger, and my Constitution hull is waiting for hers.

Your work convinced me to pull the trigger on the Proxxon DB250.

Thanks again,

-Rich

Take a closer look at my more recent posts. I switched from Proxxon DB250 to the 17" metric version of the Sherline lathe. I caught it on sale and wish I'd invested in that instead of the Proxxon DB 250. If I weren't already giving the Proxxon lathe away to a friend just starting out (and on a very limited budget), I'd offer you mine. You still have to accessorize the stock Proxxon and you won't truly be satisfied with it. If XKen thought the Sherline was the lathe to have, that's good enough for me..

Hi, reviewing the log, see a few notes about my work. It’s an honor to be included.

I followed Bob Hunt’s practicum.

The deck planks are individual. Did not add additional support, worked with the kit bulkheads/beams. Idea was span four beams, with a butt joint every fourth row. However, see some planks that are much longer, can’t remember why that is. Also can’t remember why I didn’t level the deck.

The deck planks fore and aft are not tapered, just the planks going in amidships.

For the hull planking, lined out the belts, calculated the number of planks needed, used proportional dividers to mark the width on the plank at each bulkhead.

Thank you.

I'm about to start the hull planking on my Constitution, Rich, and have seen several mentions of using a proportional divider to assist in the markings within each belt. So, I'm about to make another purchase...

And yes, I've already purchased the Proxxon DB250 (prior to Peter's Sherline revelation) but haven't even used it yet.

Hi guys,

Ok, now looking at the Sherline.

Ok, now looking at the Sherline. Why metric?

Ugh, now looking at a Sherline package Mill and Lathe. Instead of Sherline lathe and Proxxon mill.

The big idea is setting up to do masting quickly.

Recommendations? Compound slide is a necessity.

These are going to be some expensive spars ROTF.

The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. Been there. Done that.
Want to make a significant dent in the stash.

Raised cash by selling some kits and Powermatic 3520 lathe - turned a few main masts on that beast.

Time to take the shipbuilding to the next level, so far it’s been skill building. Now it’s time to get precise. Thanks men.
