Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

As promised here are some images of little details I have been adding to my ship.

First, I added some shot boxes and buckets to accompany the guns:

Added a different rope coil to the davit:

Fabricated and installed spears for two of the soldiers on the stern. There's actually some controversy over how many of these little guys held spears. I chose two...

I completed a capstan more than a year ago, but I put the parts together and placed it on the deck this week:

A safety rope for the rudder:

Finally, I constructed a lantern. Several comments: a stern lantern was never found with the wreckage of the ship in Stockholm Harbor. Indeed, it remains uncertain if the Vasa even had a stern lantern. I chose to attempt one, but I'm not entirely convinced. Sadly, I failed to take pictures along the way. This was a fiddly thing to fabricate and stopping to take pictures never really occurred to me in the heat of battle. Still, I did manage a few images...

There was a comprehensive fail in my inaugural attempt at one of the man-arts. How hard can soldering be? Looks like I'll need to read up on how to do it... ROTF.

Thanks for stopping by!

Oh, by the way, I had it in my head that I was going to add flags to my model. I ordered some silk ones from somewhere a long time ago, but they aren't really usable. I've poked around on the forum but haven't been able to discover a method of making/printing believable flags. Asking for help!

Good afternoon Paul. The little details… they add so much to a ship. The shot holders and buckets look cool- are there enough as one or two may appear as an after thought?
I do like your “untidy” hanks and coils all over the ship.
As for the Capstan. I am wondering if you considered leaving this off ? It is a massive contribution to your Vasa…in my opinion.
Spears….no help when the Victory sails through the mist ;) and the lantern is a must. An A+ Paul.;).

Seriously. Brilliant Paul !
Cheers Grant

Yes he can print on cotton or whatever he got. He can tell you more about that. I make the design of the flags in photoshop. And send it too him as pdf file. He prited it on the textile and send it to me. I cut it out and glued it together, so the print is on both sides. Just ask Hans.

Thank you kindly, Grant. There are 10 boxes and 10 buckets (basically in between each of the guns). I'm glad you like the capstan and the lantern - microprojects that took lots of time.

The kit comes in 12 (monthly) boxes and each box contains the individually packaged stages that correspond to the build steps (detailed in the Assembly Guide on the Model-Space website).

The first thing I did was open the boxes and take a complete inventory. Did I have all the packages? It appeared that I did (oddly, one was labeled for the German market but that surely shouldn’t matter).

I then identified all of the cast metal/decorative pieces and removed them from the packages. To the extent that I could I tried to combine ‘like’ pieces into zip lock bags labeling each bag with the box it came from along with the build-stage. Inexplicably, for example, the lions’ heads for the gun port covers were found in more than ten different stages of the build...

While the Assembly Guide calls for simultaneous construction and painting this seems wonky to me (though it would spread out the meticulous painting obligation). I could not imagine building the false keel and frame elements over the course of months while also painting decorations along the way. It seemed better to gather all the pieces and build the ship in the same general flow as all the other builds I have seen on the forums.

As a novice I might regret this decision since it means I will not be following the DeAg build instructions precisely. Since my Roter Lowe instructions were in Italian 35 years ago and I only speak English I felt (foolishly?) emboldened to use the instructions as a guide rather than as dogma. ;)

About half-way through the sorting I began to better appreciate the scope of what I was going to be attempting – there are lots and lots of parts – and there are lots and lots of metal bits – and lots of the metal bits are really tiny. How was I going to detail/paint something I could barely see? I held one of the little metal guys under a 1.5 magnifying lamp. Brighter! But still tiny. Maybe I need to start dialing back my expectations!

So, that's the story of my prep work... Next post will happen when I have something to show. Thanks for checking out this new forum!

Good grief, so that’s what was in those boxes September 2020!
Birch twigs and branches too? :DROTF

Very nice work again Paul.
One remark on your lantern, I think it is positioned to high above the deck.
How does anyone get acces to the lantern to light the candles.

Regarding the flags you can use the methode I used to transfer laser printed images. You can also do this with cloth, as long as you use a laser printer and not an inkjet.
