Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Magnificent Paul!! I'm sure looking forward to the next phase of rigging.
When you set the 'beak' and its colorful collections it will be even more beautiful.
Thanks much Daniel! Yes, rigging is in my future but first I need to solve a few other puzzles. The upper railing design in the DeAg kit has nothing to do with the real ship so I'll need to scratch those into reality. And I am excited about the prospect of building the beakhead/galleon. This will also need to be made by hand and in this case I will be working from drawings for the first time - feels like a disaster waiting to happen!

Hello, Mon Amie! You must be proud and have absolute satisfaction building your VASA. She really shines in your hands! Awesome job! :)
Thanks, Jim, for the upgrade to Mon Amie! And, yes, I am happy to share this build with the members of the SOS forum. As for the photo - there goes my status in the witness protection program...

Happy 1st Anniversary :).

You have a lot of guts carrying your model outdoors! But the artwork, which is what it is, looks even more beautiful in the natural light. Just wonderful.
I carry my hull outside all the time to dust it off when sawdust gets on it. Just don't leave it out there too long or the squirrels will make off with it...

What are you considering, Paul?
Well, first off I'm going to scratch build a ship's boat to accompany my Vasa. But after that I'm thinking I should try a plank-on-frame build. I love what others are doing with exposed frames and think it makes for a marvelous presentation. There are several new kits coming out that are being showcased on the forum but I'm trying not to fall in love just yet, I have a long, long way to go on this current project and my personality can't handle two builds at the same time ;).

Thanks, everyone, for the kind birthday wishes.

I did a little painting this weekend so I could wrap up the 'knechts' (thanks, @Heinrich). Here is what I ended up with (it would seem that a few of these 'servants' have found the captain's store of brännvin):

I ordinarily paint multiple pieces when I get my painting gear out but I am trying to wrap up some loose ends so this was all I painted this time around. Specifically I'm trying to install some of the bits and baubles that show up on the deck. At some point I need to build the upper railings and once I do that it will become difficult to access portions of the deck without damaging the upper railings (I did note that @PeterG cleverly built his railings and then took them off to be reinstalled later in the build). Indeed, with the addition of the guns the model has now entered an increasingly fragile state that will never go away.

To mark the one year anniversary of this build I took my ship outdoors for a bit of fresh air. In these photos you will find the following completed steps: installation of the ladders, two kevels at the forward rail, the knechts, simulated deck reinforcements at the mast locations, a hatch cover aft of the foremast, the gratings, and the capstan sans the push bars:

As she turns ONE I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who have offered likes, words of encouragement, suggestions, corrections, or just the occasional visit to see what I have been up to. I am humbled by your interest.

Can I please have your first ship. Paul?

Paul,

1st. Happy belated birthday wish lol. Your Vasa is brilliant. Those outdoor images really bring her to life. Superlative attention to details indeed. Glad that I have caught up

Cheers,

Hi Paul,

She looks spectacular. Especially outside the colour contrast of the hull and carvings look realy mesmerizing.

I also love the painted "knechten", you gave them matching nordic sweaters 8-).

Matching sweaters....

Why yes I did Maarten! Thank you for noticing! It was my own little wink/nod toward the ship's blended Norse heritage! Not period correct but it made me happy.

Hi Paul,
I want to say how much I enjoy reading through your build log. Your craftsmanship in my opinion is that of a master. Also, you have a way with words and friendly manner of engaging with SOS members that has encouraged many to offer their expertise and knowledge. Your build log has a wealth of information that will help novice ship modelers such as myself. I’ll be going through your build again and taking notes. Thanks for taking the time to post.
