Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

...strange? Hmm...wonder what parts of this wonderful hobby are strange :p Does the case made of plexiglass? Did you make your own or bought it online?
Yes, the case is plexiglass, and it is my own construction (though I had pieces cut for me rather than trying to cut them myself). You don't think making a plexi box is a strange thing to do? It's the last thing I could have imagined myself doing five years ago... ROTF

I used a very thin cyanoacrylate intended for plexiglass (plastic). I used a needle tip and ran a line along the seam and it was drawn in between the pieces just as you have described (capillary action). I did spend quite a lot of time cleaning up the edges before putting them together even though I intend to put a wood frame around the case (if I can manage that).

Good looking case Paul. What thickness of plexiglass did you use, I'm in shock at how expensive it is especially in the thicker 1/4 " and up.
Indeed. The cost was breathtaking (north of $500 US) for 1/4" (the case is roughly 20" by 48"). I think 3/8" would have been a better choice but that was a special order for the glass shop with unknown delivery date and additional cost (I didn't ask because when they told me the cost of the 1/4" I was no longer able to speak coherently).

I also have a piece of edge-glued oak forming the base (also oddly expensive). I cut a rabbet into the edge of that wood panel to receive the plexi. I think a routed slot would have been better but I doubted my ability to work at such precise tolerances. I gave myself about 1/8" slop in the rabbet and that worked out very well.

My goal is to make the side of the plexiglass box removable (as it sits on the table it would not be possible to lift the box over the top of the ship without running into the overhead beams). To that end I will be adding trim pieces around the edges/corners of the case - and perhaps also along the bottom. I have an idea in my head - just not sure if it can be realized. Stay tuned...

Hey Paul. Not even what I'm asking here, but is the plexiglass UV treated or special? Or is that the cost of plain old 1/4 inch plexi?
UV and plain old were the same cost...

Maybe it would have been cheaper to get this from a big box store (?) but I wanted the size to be exact and I've used this glass shop in the past and gotten excellent service from them.
