That is interesting Peter, I truly am ignorant on the historical side of these old sailing ships. I do however appreciate their majestic beauty.
VASA 490 Build Log - Billing Boats, 1:75 [COMPLETED BUILD]
Good morning all.
I have finally finished the upper rail section and I must say it was a challenge that at first, I was not sure I could pull off but now am ecstatic at the results! I scratch built all of the rail members because the kit supplied version was for me totally unacceptable. The first group of pics are during construction and showing a set of end mill engraving bits I purchased to carve the profile into the 12ea radius sections.
At this point as you will see I am woefully lacking in ability to carve the radial profiles, but the show must continue to move forward. This looks much better from a distance.
To maintain the rail width through the radius sections, I had to glue several short pieces together then cut out the radii from that.

Thank you, Paul. I think now I can start going vertical so I shall keep my eye on your progress for my instruction. I noticed in one of your recent post you are stocking up on your rope. I keep thinking in the back of my mind I need to do the same thing between everything else.
Well, you saw I made masts and yards but I haven't installed anything yet because there is still some work to complete on the hull - mostly I need to finish up painting some decorative metal bits for the stern (and I also need to paint the frieze that goes on/in the bulkhead). I should have just installed gold adornments!!!
And, as you mentioned, I have also started making rope for the standing rigging in various sizes. I have noticed that many of our colleagues just make rope along the way but I think (for my personality) it will be better to make up as much as I can ahead of time. I think I will just be frustrated if I need a size of rope only to realize I need to stop and make it...probably overthinking this. As you know - rope making is simultaneously satisfyingly as well as tedious so I think it is healthy to break up that task into workable units so I am spinning rope when I need a break from other aspects of the build. Your suggestion to just spin out the right hand source threads is working very well.
Sorry to talk about MY build on YOUR build log. Your ship is really turning out great - there are several elements I like more on your model than on mine. It's a delight to share this journey with you.

To me the fun part is building the ship and all the deck furnishings. Then comes masts, yards, rigging, etc. To me the second phase is not as fun, as I don’t get excited about rope and pulleys…lol. But it’s what completes the ship and the build. Some really enjoy this phase, and I hope you can find enjoyment in it too. I’m sure your rope will look excellent!

Daniel your ship is beautiful without even an inkling of doubt. Like @dockattner Paul said, it looks very authentic and that to me is the acid test. And while I have roped Paul in here, what a nice post to Daniel. That is really class!
Thank you for your kind words Dean. Sometimes the challenges on this ship drive me to aggravation but I'm learning that on occasion sucess, and joy lie just beyond that aggravation. My favorite part is the mast and rigging and I'm especially excited at the rope making portion which I really enjoy. Of course I still have a lot of hull work left canons port hole doors chain plates etc.Great job Daniel. She’s looking so good now!

I really like your work Daniel. I am amazed by the fact you and also Dean62 can get this result from a BB kit. It's a real big compliment of your neat work and your modeling capabilities. The color of the wood is spot on!

It was pleasing to my eyes to see, you made the effort and going the extra mile with aftermarket wood, blocks and also ropes. It does so much with a model especially when it's in hands like yours. I understand the challenge, BB kit's are notorious. Keep it up and much, much respect!
