VOC ship The Prins Willem (scale 1:75) Year 1651

At all thanks again for the many likes and kind words.

The most difficult thing I discovered is to get the right scale when you work freehand. This one is a little to big. Just 2 a 3 mm. But that makes it easier to see what you create. I leave it this way. I try to get the rest on scale.

The first one out of a piece of boxwood.
First get the piece fit in place

Then after a lot of work and lots of dust (and cramp in hands Paul).

You can see on this picture the difference in scale. The others are indeed a little to small and this one I created now is a little to big. Lets say the average is okay.

The old one of polymer, witch goes in the bin, just use it to get the rough form to fit on the ship.

with every single object we can see your development of your carving work
The new one is once more much better than the older one - I would keep the small first one´s
Thanks Uwe, there is so much to learn. I feel even the different in boxwood. The old ones that where made of boxwood, was European boxwood en old. The new one that I carve from a piece of boxwood is Chinese stuf. Good but not perfect to work with. A lot softer and the wood easily split in the grain. Careful when carving. Drilling goes perfect because it's softer.

The head is bigger then the other in the macro photo. But on the ship the difference is to minimum. I keep them both. It's a lot of work and I like them both.

I started with the new one. First get it fit to the ship, then get it in thee right proportions.

Thanks for watching, kind words and the likes.

By the way, one of the greatest sing and songwriter of the Dutch died this week. Great lost, one of his greatest songs together with freedom warriors
Hear this song again I think, no I'll not miss him. :)

Thanks again for the likes, the nice words and visiting my log.
Just 1 to go.
But first to show you this one, It took a lot of work in the details. I think this is on of the most accurate face I made. On the picture it is difficult to see. You need to see them in real to see the shadow details. But it gives a good impression of the work.

Great results Stephan!! Great anatomical proportions. Rarely do we see an expression on such a small human carving. That is one sailor that means business by the expression on his face, square jaw and grimace. I would not want to run into him.

Thanks Ken. I'm experience with different faces, a different nose, eyes and indeed jaws. This one took a lot of time and patience to get. Difficult but fun to do, thanks again to step by.
