On modelbouwforum there is a builder who builds his ships this way. The name is pauwels.
He build a few frames on important places. Then they connect them with planks and after that the hull will filled up. The name of these planks will Ab know. There is a special name for.
Hi Stephan,

This is actually the way ships were build in the Southern part of Holland. You have de "spanten van oprichting" which were then covered with centen to create the shape of the hull. Then the hull was filled in with the rest of the frames.
The original 7 Provincien was most probably build like this in Rotterdam.

Hello Heinrich, I came in late on your Haarlem build but it's been great reading through your log. The way you provide a history along with your builds is especially interesting and informative. After also following your wonderful Sampan build I am claiming a front row seat for the Willem Barentsz.

Thank you for the most kind words Roger. Your front-row seat is reserved!

And the work on the rigging of the cannons continued until the Starboard Side was also done. And that is what 6 fully-rigged 24-p0unders look like on deck!

The lifeboat was just loosely positioned to see what the deck will look like. Now there is still a plethora of hooks and eyes that need to be added.

And with the guns onboard, a very prominent member of the crew has finally decided that it is now safe enough to nestle up in his rightful position. Welcpme aboard Mr. Lion, aka Meneer Leeuw, aka Roter Lowe.

Looks good Heinrich. I guess they weren’t concerned with tripping hazards on the old ships…lol. Never pass OSHA nowadays! ;)

Congratulations on the rigging accomplishment. I know you worked hard on that and it turned out great. Good for you!!!
Thank you Paul. I am both happy and unhappy with it at the same time. :) I am happy that I have done it the right and historically-correct way., but I am unhappy with the aesthetics - it just looks too crowded. I think that the lifeboat somewhat softens the crowded look and obviously when the rigging starts taking place, that will help too. That is exactly what I mean by saying one is constantly walking a fine balance between looks and accuracy - especially at scales of 1:64 and 1:72. If I wanted to achieve the kind of visual results that the expert Russian modelers achieve with their 1:96 builds, I would have to build in 1:36 or 1:48 scale.

That is another reason why I have opted for a 1:50 build on my next model and why I have chosen one with far fewer details and a much cleaner, more simplistic look to it. I would NEVER be able to do what you are doing on the Vasa in terms of dealing with all those thousands of decorative little bits.

But then - just to throw a spanner in the works, I do have a super-complicated semi-scratch-build in 1:36 scale also lurking in the background. ROTF

Thank you Dean. Look, I knew from the word go, that it was going to look too crowded. As I have said to @dockattner Paul and @Stevedownunder Stephen, I think the lifeboat does help to bring things a little in perspective, but aesthetically, I was never going to achieve a "clean" or "neat" look. In this instance, I am ok with that, because everything I do on this build is a first for me. I wanted to try my hand at rigging the cannons correctly and accurately. Now I have done that and am wearing the T-shirt, so in future I will know much better what to include and what not.

For me, it’s not a matter of it being crowded, it’s the thought that they had all this rear tackle for the crew to trip over! Especially on a ship at sea that is moving around. Stepping over extended ropes seems like a hazardous proposition. But that was obviously what they did, ignoring good logic in the process! ;)
