WOW WOW WOW - this model is big
great work - would be great to see more, maybe in a building log just starting from actual status

I'm currently working on a version of L'Hermione circa 1780 from the best research I can find. I have coppered the hull and I am going for a realistic look of the deck planking based on video of the replica at sea from YT. So far I am happy with most of the build, save the area around the gun ports. I used a yellow Ocre paint mix, but I'm not really enthused about the results.I'm thinking about adding a layer of natural veneer over the area. What think 'ye ?

Wowwww. Just amazing

I made a few alterations when building. Since it is partworks, I decided to wait until I had all of the frame sections and then stacked them up in alignment and drilled holes to accommodate dowels to keep the whole thing straight. It made it a lot more sturdy. Once planked it was then sanded down fully and a further 0.5 mm black walnut layer added for additional strength. The wood used is not fantastic quality overall but the changes have made a big difference. I am hoping to get back to it fairly soon. Cheers Davydd

While it's not a ship model, my latest project is for ship models, three, in fact, plus something that goes with my own ship model. The figures in the images are not mine, they are from Artejaol Studios.

Part of this project was just completed; the battery of the Harriett Lane in 1:96 scale, all 3D modeled and printed from scratch, including:
9" Dahlgren on a pivot mount, 9"Dahlgren on Marsilly carriages, 24pdr Dahlgren howitzers, and a 30pdr Parrott rifle on a pivot mount.

A 1:72 scale model of the Susquehanna also gets a battery of 9" Dahlgrens on Marsilly carriages and some 24pdr howitzers, plus a pair of 150pdr Parrotts on pivot mounts. These are all 3D modeled, but have yet to be printed.

My own part of this project is to make a sampler of one of every gun the sloop of war Constellation carried from 1855 through 2024 in the same 1:36 scale as my model of the ship. These will be mounted on a board that will sit in front of the ship model when she's on display. This entails one each of: 8" shell-gun on Naval carriage, 32 pounder long gun on Naval carriage, 10" shell-gun on pivot mount, 30pdr Parrott on pivot, 20pdr Parrott on pivot, 9" Dahlgren on Marsilly, 100pdr Parrott on wood pivot, 11" Dahlgren on iron pivot, 24pdr gun on a truck carriage (1800 vintage, from when they tried to pass her off as a frigate).

None of these project called for it, but since I need an 11" Dahlgren gun tube myself, and the 9" pivot used the same slide, I went ahead and made it's wooden pivot carriage for the heck of it.

The remaining guns will be a 7" Armstrong rifle and a 10" Columbiad, but I don't know the ship or scale they're going to be yet.
