YQ Bluenose by Johan [COMPLETED BUILD]

Dear Johan. In three words: "She is magnificent!" I am so fortunate to have been privy to this amazing journey that you have undertaken; not only that, but also to have witnessed the growth of you as a model builder (personal confidence levels, skill sets, willingness to try new things and experiment with others, interpret instructions/build plans etc.) has been an absolute honor. You have created a model which easily holds her own against the other magnificent Bluenose builds and one which carries your personal signature. You can indeed be very proud of what you have achieved with Bluenose, and I can tell you now - it is going to take one hell of a build to better this one! Petje af!

Thank you so much, Heinrich, for your more than kind words and compliments, they are gracefully accepted and truly appreciated.
As you are aware, I was very hesitant in starting this Bluenose journey, doubting, not knowing my capabilities. Once I finally committed myself, I found inspiration and advice, here on SOS and with the help of quite some friends, I was able to build her as she stands now; tall and proud, with many a deviation from the original drawings and instructions.
YQ provided a solid foundation upon which one can freely improvise, so a thank you to YQ is also appropriate.
Last but not least, a big thank you for you; you were among those who provided guidance, motivation and even hardware and workshops throughout the entire build. I genuinely believe that sharing one's progress here on SOS and accepting the reviews of your fellow builders strongly improves the quality of one's build.

In my picture folder I came across this comparison between my interpretation of YQ's Bluenose (left) and YQ's view of the same model on the right.
So happy I did all those customizations.

Sono perfettamente d'accordo con Lawrence (Canoe21).
Johan ha fatto un lavoro magnifico.

In genere provo molto gusto a vedere due modelli navali in scala a confronto, le piccole differenze suscitano sempre il mio interesse.

I completely agree with Lawrence (Canoe21).
Johan did a magnificent job.

Generally I get a lot of pleasure from seeing two scale naval models compared, the small differences always arouse my interest.

YQ supplies you with a rather sound base model upon which you can add your own customizations.
The Bluenose POF Group Build shows quite a few examples of how that may work out. It definitely was a fun kit to build.

After applying a semi gloss varnish the gloss shine has been reduced considerably.
I'll leave the paint job for now, let her sit for a couple of days and see if I (and the Admiral of course) still like it; Dean's suggestion is still on the table...
Now it's touch-up time, tidying up the waterline and cleaning out the scuppers.

Could you share what Vallejo red you used for the hull? Also what quantities I should order for the white, black an red?
Thank you,
Ted

In the end I didn't use Vallejo, but Humbrol gloss paints, with a semi gloss varnish as top coat.
The Vallejo color was "red", whereas the Humbrol paint I eventually used was red gloss, number 33.
One bottle/can for each color will be more than sufficient.

I wouldn't have used the word "perfect", but nevertheless, your praise is appreciated!
If one is willing to learn some new skills, trying to be patient and accepting redo's are a fact of life for modellers the fruit of one's labor might be surprising...
Just giving credit where it is due

Hello Johan. Happy Belated Birthday, so sorry that I am late. Great job on your sails, you are a very brave man. I leave this tact to my Admiral Bernadette. I will have to spend a lot more time catching up on yours and other YQ-Bluenose builds as I have fallen very far behind this past summer.

Regards Lawrence
Beautiful work

Dear fellow shipwrights,
Today marks the end of a remarkable journey; I declare my Bluenose POF build as being completed!
Before I started this build I had a few misgivings; it was quite some time ago I tried anything related to modelling, other than restoring a BB Bluenose kit to it's former glory, plus I never did anything like building plank on frame. Therefore I was very reluctant to order the YQ POF-kit. Luckily there was SOS, with many examples sailing around from which I could take away many ideas, often sound advice and not to forget the frequent compliments and words of encouragement.
It became a build not completely according to the build instructions or drawings; I added quite a bit of details, the most worthy of note are the 3D printed engine, rudder mechanism, anchor and barrels, the lights, both in the various compartments, the navigation lights and the lights, dressing the ship and not to forget the sails.
I have a lot of people to thank for their help, with parts, with advice, with lending tools, drawings, etc... I hope no one feels offended, but I'm not going for the trap to actually start mentioning them, that's bound to not going to end well, since I am prone to forget quite a few.
Other noteworthy occurrences were the DBBS meetings, which allowed the participants to share their experiences and show the models to one another, in the meantime enjoying a nice cup of coffee and lunch.
As you may know, I still don't have selected a next build, I really don't know what to start, but I'm sure I'll find something which catches my fancy.
As a parting gift of sorts, a few pictures from my interpretation of the YQ Bluenose kit:
