ZHL Le Soleil Royal

I can see there's a huge amount of work to do on a 100 gun ship, I'll love to build one but will have to work my up to it. It's very interesting to see how the resin castings are made.
I am interested to see how to do the resin and to see the results as well. Keep up the good work, Jay.

Tony, the Black Pearl you built was fantastic. You don’t need to work up to the SR. I for one would love to see you do this kit.

Hi Jay
Great to see you back
One thing you may want to think about before making the canons in resin, is that, in the pictures and plans from ZHL, the cannons on the upper deck (those on the left in your picture) have the aft part bent upwards. I have not done that on mine, but think I will change and make this bend.
I agree with you about the cannons but think the upturned ones look a little weird. I was even thinking about shortening the aft part. I will have to research a bit more.

It’s been a while but I finally finished the port side planking. As I always do, I used drywall mud instead of wood filler on any gaps or imperfections. Now I need to finish the planking on the rear of the ship where the cannons go.

While I was doing the planking I also was making a mold for the 3 types of cannons on the ship. The mold turned out fine but the cannons are so small and narrow when I poured the resin it trapped air and the trunnions were so small the resin couldn’t fill the inside of that part of the mold that well. I had my doubts before I started so I wasn’t that disappointed. If I have time I may experiment some more. 0B00993D-790C-472F-BE59-9E6C2232EA9C.jpegC9D0D1EC-22F8-4009-8645-0944AD77EFD6.jpegFDF8382C-5043-4321-B80E-B3F2FC58CC7C.jpegB8D9855E-B50E-426C-950B-D405BC20C9B9.jpeg

Good to see you back at it, Jay! Be careful when you do the galleries. Mine weren't as parallel as they should have been. And put on the side galleries before the back ones. You are sure devoted to the molds. I bet your ship will be a lot lighter than mine.

Thanks Vic, not really looking forward to the final planking it doesn’t look like it will be as forgiving as the Black Pearls was. I will watch out for the galleries when the time comes.

The planking was actually easier for me. Of course, I had learned to taper the forward planks to about 1/2 width. I also used stealers and whatever they call the spacer planks at the front. That kept the planks from warping and buckling. The Galilee Boat I’m working on has single layer planking. A bit of a challenge in and of itself. Keep up the good work, brother!

Hi Jay
Great to see you back on deck.

Finally finished the first planking on the aft of the ship where the cannons go. Marked out where the gun port frames will approximately go.

Now that I will be doing the second planking I used my laser to mark a line where the sepele planking separates from the lighter planking and to make sure they align at each side of the bow.

So I will get to work on the planking but I will also make a mold for these 4 decorations that go on the aft portion of the ship where the cannons go. Hopefully they turn out better than the cannons did.

Those four decorations are not shaped right. I tried bending them, but they broke. I wish I had had my hot air gun at that time. They would have been easier to bend. Crossing my fingers and pressing my thumbs for your mold.

Vic, that’s what I like about resin, it’s easy to trim by sanding.

I have a question, all the images I see of the Soleil Royal and the plans I have of the Soleil Royal there is an absence of a ships wheel. How was the rudder controlled or was the wheel somewhere below deck, does anyone know?

Some ships didn’t have a wheel. While I was looking at @dockattner Vasa model, I saw it had a pole that the helmsman moved left and right. I’m not sure if it was the same on the SR, although that would be my guess View attachment 300617

Vic, great picture. It seems to me that a ship of war would have a wheel on the top deck but I’m no expert. Wouldn’t you need to have someone calling down to you shouting directions? What if that guy was hit, how would the helmsman know where to go? But hey, we were in the military and ours is not to reason why ours is but to do and die.
